3 TS3500 tape library overview
A single library system includes: frames (plus two service bay frames) LTO and/or 3592 tape drives ,000 storage slots Up to 180 PB* Storage Capacity I/O slots ( I/O Stations) 255 virtual I/O slots per logical library 1- 2 accessors (robotics) shuttle connections to other library systems Base frame (Model Lx3) active expansion frames shuttle connections Service bay A Service bay B * Using TS1140 drives and media at 3:1 compression 3

4 High Density (HD) frames – up to 3X capacity
Nearline cartridge cache (application independent) Tier 0 Slots (220 LTO or ) Tier 1 Slots (220 or 200) Tier 2 Slots (220 or 200) Tier 3 Slots (220 or 200) Tier 4 Slots (220 or 200) Tier 5 Slots (220 or N/A)) Least recently used Add up to 4PB in 10 sq.ft. 1, cartridges OR 1,320 LTO cartridges Side View Cartridge Cache Load balancing of tiers to optimize access 4

5 Three case studies of clients exploiting TS3500 HD slots Each client increased slot density by ~2X while maintaining industry-leading time-to-data With <10% of mounts from tiers 2-5, the average time-to-data impact of TS3500 HD slots is < 700 milliseconds! 5

6 The domino effect of tape mount time
Lower mount time leads to less disk buffer… …which leads to more budget for flash... …which leads to… [Insert your favorite IBM FlashSystem benefit here] *Notes: TS3500 HD average impact of 700 milliseconds based on example case studies Vendor A mount time comes from public data sheets Vendor B mount time is an estimate based on public information 6

7 A brief history of the IBM TS3500
10 generations of 3592 and LTO technology resulting in a 40X improvement in cartridge capacity and over 16X improvement in aggregate data rate 3 generations of power technology resulting in more than a 25% reduction in power consumption 3 generations of library control system resulting in up to a 28X improvement in internal communications speeds 2 generations of storage slot technology resulting in more than a 2X improvement in slot density (more than a 80X improvement in data density) 3 generations of cartridge gripper design supporting the above upgrades Numerous field upgradeable firmware innovations such as Persistent WWN, Path Failover, Advanced Library Management System, Library Managed Encryption, and Cartridge Cache 7

14 New option for customer-usable rack space
10U of rack space above each TS3500 or TS4500 library frame Field install Opportunity for “zero footprint” rack-mount components such as Fibre Channel switches, Ethernet switches, IBM FlashSystems, and/or tape-attached servers Treated as completely independent rack space – not tied to service/support of the tape library 14

24 Tape System Reporter (TSR)
TS4500 IMC TSR server: Collect data from multiple tape libraries and store in an aggregated database. TSR client: Provide custom reports to view a wide variety of metrics for the tape libraries, tape drives, and tape cartridges. Includes ability to perform data mining For TS3500: The TSR server and database must be installed by the end-user. For TS4500: The TSR server and database are now preinstalled on the IMC to monitor the attached TS4500. An SQL query (e.g. from the TSR client or other reporting software) can be performed on the TSR database via a TS4500 IP address. NOTE: This SQL query capability will be made available with a post-GA library firmware release. 24

25 TS4500 security improvements
LDAP (Lightweight Directory Access Protocol)/Kerberos client now integrated – no longer require a separate Storage Authentication Service SSL/TLS (Secure Sockets Layer/Transport Layer Security) performance improved Password and Session Policy now supported 25

26 Other integrated management improvements
Domain Name Services now supported Network Time Protocol now supported 26

28 Initial TS4500 solutions General Availability June 13
Up to 4 frames with one accessor in the tape library for a max native capacity of 14.2 PBs with TS1140 drives and a max of 11.7 PBs with LTO 6 drives. Open Systems attachment including Linux, AIX, Windows, IBM i, and Solaris SCSI command set fully emulates TS3500 The broad ISV support of TS3500 is expected for TS4500 including IBM Tivoli Storage Manager and IBM Linear Tape File System (LTFS) solutions Statement of direction: IBM will support high availability and scale out configurations for the TS4500. In addition, IBM will offer TS3500 frame upgrades to the new generation control system. IBM's statements regarding its plans, directions, and intent are subject to change or withdrawal without notice at IBM's sole discretion. 28

29 A word about the TS3500 lifespan…
If the TS3500-to-TS4500 control system transition were to follow the history of 3494-to-TS3500 (3584)… We would expect new generations of tape drives and media to continue to be introduced into TS3500 until (with the possible exception of pre-2004 era L32/D32 frames) We would expect TS3500 Dx3/Sx4 expansion frames to continue to be offered until NOTE: End of support is typically at least 5 years after withdraw from marketing (and often much longer) IBM's statements regarding its plans, directions, and intent are subject to change or withdrawal without notice at IBM's sole discretion. 29
