Lions & Stamps Lions International Stamp Club (LISC)

The Lions International Stamp Club ( LISC ) was formed at the International Convention in Atlantic City in 1951 by dedicated Lions with a common bond of Lionism and Philately. The purpose of LISC is to foster and develop the avocation of stamp collecting among Lions and their families, Leos and Lionesses, and to strengthen Lionism through International Goodwill.

First Lions Stamp The first Lions stamp was issued by Cuba in 1940 at the 24 th International Convention in Havana

Melvin Jones Melvin Jones, the founder of Lions International, was an avid stamp collector and a charter member of LISC. Nicaragua is the first country to honor and depict Melvin Jones on a stamp. This stamp was issued on the occasion of the 17th Convention of District “D”. Many countries followed as the next slide shows.

Lions Headquarters Several stamps depict the headquarters of Lions International in Chicago (till 1971) & Oak Brook (1971 – now) San Marino, 1960 Paraguay, 1967 Thailand, 1998

Lions Logo The logo of Lions International itself is subject of many stamps, honoring Lionism. The logo consists of the heads of two lions, one looking to the left and the other to the right. The Lions logo is also used as overprint on regular stamps. Most often this is done for commercial purposes, attracting stamp collectors.

International Conventions Every year a Lions International Convention is organised. The 24th Convention in Havana in 1940 was the first outside the USA. On this occasion the first Lions stamp was issued. Several stamps remind us of the different Lions Conventions outside the US since. In 2002 the Convention took place in Osaka, Japan.

Raoul Follereau Honoring RAOUL FOLLEREAU, a member of the Lions International Club of France. FOLLEREAU contributed greatly to the creation of the “Village of Hope”, Samanko, Mali (Africa), intended for the lepers who have been cured but who still need further treatment and who have to be reinstated into society. He organized the “RAOUL FOLLEREAU FOUNDATION” which along with other humanitarian organizations such as the Lions International caused the “Village of Hope” to become a reality.

Helen Keller Born in Tuscumbia, Alabama, in 1880, Helen Keller at the age of 19 months contracted a fever that left her blind and deaf. Her parents engaged Anne Sullivan to be her tutor. She was able to bring out and help develop the child's enormous intelligence. Helen Keller quickly learned to read and write. At the age of 24 Helen Keller was awarded a B.A. degree magna cum laude. After graduation Helen Keller began her life's work of helping blind and deaf-blind people. She won numerous honours, including honorary university degrees and the Lions Humanitarian Award. She is depicted on several stamps.
