Planning and Evaluating Lessons

Planning and Evaluating Lessons: Learning Objectives for this session and the assignment to be set in this session To develop awareness of the value of self- evaluation To develop understanding of how to evaluate lessons based on assessment of students’ learning To reflect on how to put theory into practice To begin to think about how to use resources effectively for learning and teaching.

Teaching and Evaluation Assignment [T4] For this assignment you should submit a report on a piece of teaching that you have planned, taught, assessed the learning and evaluated the teaching. It may be a lesson for a whole class or for a group within a class. Objectives To develop awareness of the value of self-evaluation To develop understanding of how to evaluate lessons based on assessment of students’ learning To reflect on how to put theory into practice To begin to think about how to use resources effectively for learning and teaching. Your report must be presented in KEATS (before your oral presentation) and must include: your lesson plan a half page summary of research findings and / or theory that informed your planning particularly in relation to your choice of resources lesson evaluation based on your assessment of students’ learning learning resources used together with a brief evaluation of their value in supporting the students’ learning in this lesson and suggestions for improvement. This should be summarized as a 10 minute oral presentation to a group. We will discuss lesson evaluation in subject sessions and you should read the relevant section in the main PGCE handbook. Complete in the second part of the Autumn Term - dates for presentations to be set for individual trainees.

TS4 Plan and teach well structured lessons impart knowledge and develop understanding through effective use of lesson time promote a love of learning and children’s intellectual curiosity set homework and plan other out-of-class activities to consolidate and extend the knowledge and understanding pupils have acquired reflect systematically on the effectiveness of lessons and approaches to teaching contribute to the design and provision of an engaging curriculum within the relevant subject area(s).

TS4 Plan and teach well structured lessons Trainees achieving the standards at a minimum level may demonstrate these characteristics: Can plan to use a range of teaching strategies They can identify some areas for development within their planning and teaching

TS4 Plan and teach well structured lessons Trainees achieving the standards beyond the minimum level may demonstrate these characteristics: Planning and teaching include well chosen strategies, normally setting high expectations for learners. They are able to reflect on the strengths and areas for development within their own planning and teaching

TS4 Plan and teach well structured lessons Trainees achieving the standards at a high level may demonstrate these characteristics: Planning and teaching include a range of carefully chosen activities setting high expectations for learners, and showing some creativity and originality. They are able to reflect critically on the strengths and areas for development within their own planning and teaching.

TS 8 Fulfil wider professional responsibilities make a positive contribution to the wider life and ethos of the school develop effective professional relationships with colleagues, knowing how and when to draw on advice and specialist support deploy support staff effectively take responsibility for improving teaching through appropriate professional development, responding to advice and feedback from colleagues communicate effectively with parents with regard to pupils’ achievements and well-being.

Reflecting on and evaluating your lesson soon afterwards will help you to plan what you need to cover in the next lesson with this class do it better next time you teach this lesson/topic/class And actually, step by step, BECOME A BETTER TEACHER

Make a checklist of things to consider Helps you get further than OMG It was chaos I think they enjoyed it, they seemed interested They were too noisy They seemed to be on task most of the time They didn’t finish the task Oops! I didn’t do the plenary! They kept getting out of their places

You need to know… First and foremost – What the students learned in this lesson What did you do that helped/did not help the students to learn in this lesson Then – How you are going to begin the next lesson What will you need to go over again perhaps in the starter Can you just carry on with the next lesson as planned… or do you need to adapt your initial plan… make some changes?

What makes a good lesson?

The pupils have learnt something and They have learnt what you wanted them to learn Pupils know they have learnt something Feel they have achieved something YOU know what they have learnt And what they need to learn next

PLAN To teach them something To find out whether they HAVE learnt it And what problems they have ~what they need to learn next To give them feedback so THEY know what they have done and what they need to do next

REFLECT on What worked – AND WHY What didn’t work – AND WHY If you had to repeat the same lesson, what you would do the same? – What would you change? Did the resources work? – What would you change? You might have had a particular personal target for this lesson… but actually all lessons are about LEARNING……… DID THEY?

REMEMBER : Reflecting on and evaluating your lesson soon afterwards will help you to remember what you need to cover next time and do it better next time And actually, gradually BECOME A BETTER TEACHER

WARNING ~ Intrisic vs Extrinsic factors If you find that your evaluation includes lots of extrinsic factors like.. – Noise from other classes affected… – Pupils arrived in the wrong mood… – Pupils were unable to do the task because they are in the wrong set… – or their previous teacher had not taught them… Then you are NOT evaluating your planning and teaching and their learning You are just looking for someone else to blame! Look for things that YOU CAN CHANGE

Teaching and Evaluation Assignment [T4] “A report on a piece of teaching that you have planned, taught, assessed the learning and evaluated the teaching. It may be a lesson for a whole class or for a group within a class. Objectives To develop awareness of the value of self-evaluation To develop understanding of how to evaluate lessons based on assessment of students’ learning To reflect on how to put theory into practice. To begin to think about how to use ICT resources effectively for learning and teaching “

“Your report must be presented in the planning and evaluation Forum on Keats (before your oral presentation) and must include: your lesson plan a half page summary of research findings and / or theory that informed your planning particularly in relation to your choice of resources lesson evaluation based on your assessment of students’ learning learning resources used together with a brief evaluation of their value in supporting the students’ learning in this lesson and suggestions for improvement.

“This should be summarized as a 10 minute oral presentation to a group. We will discuss lesson evaluation in subject sessions and you should read the relevant section in the PGCE handbook. Complete in the second part of the Autumn Term - dates for presentations to be set for individual trainees NB This assignment is an individual one BUT it also provides a focus for you to visit each other and engage in JOINT EVALUATION and PEER ASSESSMENT” Text on this and the last two slides directly quoted from the ICT Handbook.

Furthermore…. These tasks link directly to the SSA where you will be planning and evaluating a series of 4 lessons This assignment is a bit like the SSA in miniature.

Dates for individual presentations :~ MWSS 7 th December Sue and Mary Jeffrey, Aram, Grant Job, Debbie, Coco 14 th December Sue and Mary Joel, DyonCaroline, Steepana, Fassika Presentations will take place in 3/6 and ? presentations will be observed by their own tutors.

Task for NOW In groups discuss and create lesson evaluation templates For your own lessons For peer observation Do you need to adapt your lesson plan template to facilitate assessment and evaluation? Do you need a basic one for use for all lessons PLUS One for use for the SSA lessons? Work in groups and upload templates to KEATS

Developing a Lesson Evaluation Template Adapted from: http://www.el-concilio.com/education/lessonEvaluation.htm http://www.el-concilio.com/education/lessonEvaluation.htm 1.Learning outcomes: Did the students achieve the objectives for this session? Are you aware of any who will need more help, or others who may need some more challenging materials? 2.Introduction: Did you arouse student interest in the topic? Were the objectives clear to the group? Did the class settle down to work? 3.Content: Was it adequate for time available? Was it well sequenced? 4.Interest: Did you maintain and promote student interest in the topic? Did you use a variety of examples and activities to keep students' attention? 3.Questioning: Did you use different sorts of questions to help students progress? Did you promote two-way communication between yourself and your students? 5.Student notes: Did you develop a clear whiteboard summary? Did it draw on student contributions? Did it help students to make their own notes? 6. Teaching aids: Did you use appropriate audio- visual aids to illustrate and emphasise key points? 7. Group contact: Did you, as group leader, have appropriate control over the activities and progress of the class? 8. Pace of progress: Did the pace suit the "average" member of the class? Did you need to adjust the level or amount of the content material for this lesson? 9. Consolidation: Did you stress the main points in the final stages of the class? Did activities enable students to receive feedback on their learning in this class? How relevant are these to CS IT lessons… what would you add…leave out…make your own list… are all the items on your list equally important?

Learning outcomes: Did the students achieve the objectives for this session? Are you aware of any who will need more help, or others who may need some more challenging materials? What did you intend the pupils to DO LEARN UNDERSTAND? How did you ASSESS that learning? What are the results of that assessment? Do you (and they) know WHAT’S NEXT?
