2 Honors Group Questions
Chapter 9 Questions Why is Atticus defending Tom Robinson? What does this quote mean, “simply because we’re licked a hundred years before we started is no reason for us not to try to win?” (Harper 63). How does this quote relate to Atticus’ character? Based off of the text, characterize Francis and Uncle Jack. Provide examples. Which theme (from your annotation handout) does Uncle Jack learn from Scout’s altercation with Francis? Atticus says, “You know what’s going to happen as well as I do, Jack, and I hope and pray I can get Jem and Scout through it all without bitterness, and most of all, without catching Maycomb’s disease” (73). What could this mean and foreshadow? Chapter 10 Questions How does Scout feel about her father? Atticus says, “Shoot all the bluejays you want, if you can hit ‘em, but remember it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird” (74). What does Miss Maudie say when explaining this to Scout? How does this relate to the novel? Why does Atticus refuse to use his talent? What does it say about his morality? How do the kids experience a perspective change?

Who is waiting on the porch when Calpurnia, Jem and Scout return home from church? Three disappointing things happen to Scout at the beginning of chapter 12. Which of the following does NOT happen? A. Scout loses her new baton somewhere on the Radley property, and finds it broken in half B. Atticus is traveling out of town every day for two weeks for business C. Dill does not visit them in Maycomb that year D. Jem begins to ignore Scout and demand that she act more ladylike and leave him alone Which of the following words is the best match to the scene set in Maycomb’s black church? When Eunice finally gets out, she says she doesn’t want to play Shadrach anymore. What is this game alluding to?

5 Chapter 12 Makeup Quiz 2/8/16 1. Why didn’t Dill come to visit that summer? He had summer school. His mother thought Jem and Scout were not good influences. He got a new father who said they would build a fishing boat. That one close encounter at Boo’s house was too much for him. 2. Reverend Sykes asked the church to take up a collection for someone. Who was the money for? 3. Jem asks how old Calpurnia is. What was her reply? 4. What does Scout learn from Calpurnia’s account of Zeebo’s education? 5. Who is Zeebo? Zeebo is some random guy in the church. Zeebo is Calpurnia’s eldest son. Zeebo lives in the church and only comes out of his room to sing the hymns on Sundays. None of the above. Bonus Question: What is the name of Calpurnia’s church?

6 Bell Ringer 2/11/2016 Answer this question in at least three sentences. You need to use at least on correct compound sentence. Underline your compound sentence. Have we come a long way in tolerating racist comments, or do we still have a ways to go?

7 Comma Rule #1 Two independent clauses, joined by a conjunction, require a comma. Josh never treated anyone with respect, for he was never taught how to treat others correctly. Two independent clauses, joined by a LARGE conjunction (furthermore, nevertheless, however…) require a semi colon and a comma after the conjunction. Susan appreciated the flowers; nevertheless, a Corvette would have been nice.

8 #1 Rule Practice Where do the commas and semi colons go?
She will go on a blind date with George however he is a really ugly fellow. The tyrannosaurs were migrating south meanwhile the Apatosaurus breathed a sigh of relief. Meanwhile Raechel sat pouting in the corner. In other words she was acting like a baby.

9 Comma Rule #2 A comma must be placed after an introductory clause (dependent clause). Sentences like this sometimes start with subordinating conjunctions (although, after, because, if since, until, when, as, while, etc.) Before we left, I ate breakfast. Because we are learning about clauses, my teacher actually expects us to use them properly. Although I listened in class, the quiz was very difficult for me.

10 Subordinating Conjunctions
Coordination (fanboys) gives equal attention to two sides. The dog ate Marvin’s favorite tie, and the cat rubbed white hair on Marvin’s black suit. Both clauses could stand alone. When joined with and, they get equal attention.

11 Subordinating Conjunctions cont.
Subordination gives less attention to one idea so that the other has emphasis. Since Marvin tried to clean his suit, he was late to the interview. “Since Marvin tried to clean his suit” is an introductory clause, so we need a comma after it. It also receives less emphasis than “he was late to the interview.” I’m sorry.

12 Here are the subordinate conjunctions.
After although as because before even though if, even if in order that once provided that since So, so that than that though unless when, whenever where, wherever, whereas whether while

13 Use a comma if you subordinate the first of the two clauses.
Subordinate clause main clause. + , + Even though cat hair clung to Marvin’s pant legs, he still got the job. The second clause has more emphasis because its thought is complete. The first clause is less important.

14 Use no punctuation if you subordinate the second of the two clauses.
Main clause subordinate clause. + Ø + Marvin smiled at his success as cat hair wafted in his wake. The second clause has less emphasis because its thought is incomplete. Now the first clause is the most important.

15 Chapter 5 and 6 Quiz Answer all questions
Chapter 5 and 6 Quiz Answer all questions. Answer at least 3 questions with a compound sentence. What does the note that Dill and Jem want to give Boo Radley say? What is significant about how determined Jem was to return alone to the Radley residence to retrieve his pants? What explanation does Dill offer when Jem loses his pants? Jem lying to Atticus about the pants symbolizes a. His fear he has when talking to Atticus b. His immaturity for once again messing with Boo Radley c. His love for his friend who he didn’t want to get in trouble d. His desire to keep his personal life personal

19 Chapter 15 Make up Quiz Discuss the events that occur Sunday night before the trial. What was the “mob” trying to do? How does Jem react when Atticus tells him to go home, and why?  What ends the first confrontation between the first group of men and Atticus? What is Atticus’ dangerous question? 21 Chapter 13 Questions What is the first thing Aunt Alexandra says to Calpurnia and Scout? What does this reveal about her character? (Analyze Character) How does Scout point of view on family differ from Aunt Alexandra? Who do you think is more accurate and why? (Analyze POV, Theme)- Page 109 What does this quote mean? “I know now what he was trying to do, but Atticus was only a man. It takes a woman to do that kind of work” (Lee 113). Is “Aunt Alexandra fitted into the world of Maycomb like a hand into a glove” a simile or an analogy? Explain. What is Atticus trying to convey to Jem and Scout? Why does he leave without communicating his point?

22 Chapter 18 Vocab Look up and write down these definitions: Perpetual
Mollify Prim Articulate

23 Diction Practice Consider other words compared to the word chosen.
What would the reader lose? “Flanked by his obeying friends, he walked the neighborhood like a Khan strolling through his land with his eager-to-please entourage” (Housseini 38). Flanked connotations- military, coming for an attack on the side. If the author would have used “surrounded” instead, we would lose that negative connotation. We wouldn’t have the same military description.
