All rights reserved. 2 of 14 Power tools Power supplies Domestic (mains) voltage is 230v, which is potentially very dangerous. This voltage is not allowed on site. Site voltage is 110v, which posses less of a risk. This voltage is indicated by yellow cables and is generally produced through use of transformers. Battery-operated tools are becoming far more popular due to their flexibility, low voltage and no trip hazards.

All rights reserved. 3 of 14 Power tools Rotary hammer drill A chuck key may be required to tighten the drill bit, although it can also sometimes be tightened by hand. The rotary hammer drill is capable of drilling into all building materials, including masonry, thanks to its hammer action. The chuck needs to kept well oiled and the chuck key must be kept safe.

It uses the Secure Drill System, which locks the drill bit in place, and can be used to chisel. Bu using its core bits, it is also suitable for drilling larger holes.

These tools have no trip hazards as they are battery operated. The cordless drill types available include simple screw drivers, drills and even SDS drills.

All rights reserved. 6 of 14 Power tools Circular saws These are very useful when lifting floorboards and notching joists. The blade needs to be set at the correct height and with the guard always in place. They are available in 230v, 110v and cordless.

All rights reserved. 7 of 14 Power tools Jig saw Jig saws are used for cutting out profiles in worktops, bathrooms and patrician walls. Care must be taken to use the correct blade for the material to be cut. Jig saws have a blade guard that must be kept in place and are available in 230v and 110v, and also cordless.

You should check: for any damage to the tool body that guard in place that the tool is sharp for damage to the plug for damage to the lead that the PAT sticker is in-date.

Under the Health and Safety at Work Act you have a duty of care to yourself, your employer and others who may be affected by your actions.
