BSc (Hons) Public Health : Rationale  In 2005 the ‘Peninsula Public Health Education Executive’ (PPHEE) was formed to work with Plymouth PCT and a number of national and local government agencies and partners to identify opportunities and options for the initiatives proposed by ‘Choosing Health’ (DH 2005).  The PPHEE mapped the provision of public health education in the Peninsula and undertook an indicative gap-analysis of provision against the competencies/standards requirements for public health practice.  The group concluded that public health education is targeted towards registrations of specialist community public health practitioners, with no award currently being available for a non- nursing public health workforce at levels 4-6 in the Peninsula  No public health postgraduate awards currently available for the public health workforce at levels 7-9 in the Peninsula

BSc (Hons) / PGDIP Specialist Community Public Health Nursing (SCPHN) : 52 week programme, FT/PT option 6 Common Public Health Competencies :20 credits Researching and Identifying Health Needs : Epidemiology/HNA – using health and social data assessment of populations health/ Research methods, Data Analysis Stimulating an Awareness of Health Needs (reducing risk behaviours, health promotion, collaborative working+ V100) Influences policies that affect Health Facilitating health enhancing activities within a quality framework : (caseload/project management/collaborative working) Promoting health and wellbeing of families and individuals within a professional framework. Promoting the public health of populations and communities within a legal and ethical framework.. Practice Portfolio 50% Practice 6.3 weeks Taught Placement 3 weeks in related area of practice 3 weeks wider public health experience 10 week consolidation = 22.3 weeks

10. NMC SCPHN Registration There are three routes to registration as a specialist community public health nurse:  Following successful completion of a NMC approved SCPHN programme of preparation : The standard route for registration as a specialist community public health nurse is to successfully complete a NMC approved programme of preparation. To be eligible to undertake the programme you must be a first level registered nurse or midwife. The programme is of 52 weeks duration, which may be undertaken either full time or part time. Your prior learning can be taken into consideration up to one third of the programme.  Following portfolio assessment for a limited period (Until December 2000) The NMC recognises that there are many nurses /midwives who already specialise in this field of practice and may be eligible to enter the register through consideration of their previous learning and experience. The NMC has agreed that those meeting specific criteria can apply to migrate to the Specialist Community Public Health Nursing part of the NMC register up until the end of December 2008.

11. NMC SCPHN Registration contd  Following registration on the United Kingdom voluntary public health register and submission of portfolio :  This option is for those first level registered nurses/midwives who are on the UK Voluntary Register for Public Health Specialists and who may also wish to be registered on the specialist community public health nursing part of the NMC register.

12. NMC Portfolio Route to SCPHN ( www.nmc- uk.org)  All applicants must hold a live registration either as a nurse or midwife on the NMC Register.  All portfolios should be assessed by SCPHN registrants who are Practising at Level 3 (Degree) with underpinning knowledge at this level.  Anyone signed off should equate to a Registrant on completion of the SCPHN programme  Registrants may APEL up to 1/3rd only of the programme of preparation leading to SCPHN

13. NMC Portfolio Route to SCPHN contd  Those registrants who already hold a school nursing or occupational health nursing qualification achieved prior to 31st October 1998 only need to demonstrate they are undertaking practice at Degree level. Application Pack one.  All portfolios must be submitted by 31 December 2008  All applicants should normally have been practising a minimum of two years before submission. (It is very unlikely that anyone could meet the criteria in any less time).  Anyone undertaking a certificate or diploma after the introduction of the degree programme in 1998 must also demonstrate academic knowledge and so apply via Application Pack 2.

15. Supporting the wider PH workforce  Our role is to support you the public Health workforce. Public Health competencies draw on a range of disciplines which contribute to public health, such as epidemiology, environmental health, disease prevention and health promotion, health information, biology, nursing, medicine, statistics, medical sociology, health psychology, social policy and health economics and the organisation and management of health care. This breadth of expertise demonstrates why public health practice must be multidisciplinary. (Donaldson 2005)
