7 Cardiff School of Nursing and Midwifery Studies Ysgol Astudiaethau Nyrsio a Bydwreigiaeth Caerdydd PERSONAL STATEMENT 1 I have successfully completed a BTEC National Diploma in Public Services. This course has increased my confidence and developed my ability to work effectively as part of a team and helped me gain an understanding of the way the public services work within society and also the way we must behave towards the public who are the main users of these services. I have a great deel of experience in working and dealing with the public. My employment at the local leisure centre as a lifeguard and also a swimming instructor (ASA level 1 & 2) was a responsible post ensuring the health and safety at all time. My experience has developed my personal skills enabling me to work independently, and as part of a team and assist and support others when performing a task and I have also developed empathy and understand the need to view from another prospective. I am currently working as a carer in a residential home for the elderly, and also care for residents with learning difficulties who live in sheltered accommodation; I also work as relief carer in a day centre for adults with learning difficulties. My work as a career has helped me evolve and I believe I have the necessary qualities to become a nurse. I understand the importance of maintaining confidentiality and respect the dignity of the individual at all times. In my opinion nursing is a rewarding profession it gives the opportunity to develop new skills, held others and make a difference to peoples lives,

8 Cardiff School of Nursing and Midwifery Studies Ysgol Astudiaethau Nyrsio a Bydwreigiaeth Caerdydd PERSONAL STATEMENT 2 My longstanding career aspiration has always been to enter the nursing profession. This stated with a visit by a registered nurse to my primary school. Although I have considered other careers I always come back to nursing. I am aware that nursing is academically, physically and emotionally demanding and requires many skills and attributes. In school I am studying English. I feel that this will provide me with communication skills that are essential in nursing. It has also developed my analytical skills which are also important when making clinical decisions. My A Level in religious studies has provided me with the opportunity to look at many ethical issues in an objective non judgemental manner. This will be vital in nursing as nurses often face such dilemmas in their practice. It has also given me an insight into many different religions and cultures which will be helpful in caring for people of differing faiths. A Level art has again developed my analytical skills but also gives me an outlet as I enjoy creative drawing as a hobby as well as part of my studies. I am aware that the nursing degree programme is very demanding. I have achieved good grades so far in my studies so feel confident that I will be able to meet the academic demands. I am a practical person so know I will enjoy the clinical placements whilst recognising that they will be physically hard due to the shift patterns and may be emotionally challenging at times. Although I have not been fortunate enough to gain any work experience in a care setting I am aware that nurses are responsible for the physical, psychological and cultural needs of patients and their families. This may include fundamental aspects of care such as washing, feeding or helping to the toilet, more complex skills such as giving drugs or providing information for the patient and their family. I have a part time job in a retail setting. My manager has commented on my patience and customer service skills in my appraisal. I have a 100% punctuality and sickness record. In school I volunteered to help younger students who were having difficulties with reading and writing. I am a young leader in my local brownie pack. I enjoy this and would hope to be able to carry this on when in university. I feel that these experiences demonstrate that I have some of the important qualities required in nursing, team working, reliability, good communication skills and a caring nature. Thank you for considering my application.
