4 R EADING : W ALK TO R EAD Reading instruction in first grade is a shared responsibility/partnership between all the first grade teachers, the resource room teachers, children and parents. Students are assessed in November, March, and May and regrouped as necessary throughout the year. A typical week includes the following components: * Netbooks: RAZ Kids * Independent Reading * Guided Reading and Literacy Centers * Whole group Reading Lessons * Read at Home books………read and return each night

5 W RITERS W ORKSHOP * Writing meetings: Lessons and modeling of skills *Sharing: Celebrating work *Conferencing: Setting goals to improve skills *Writers Celebrations: End of units

6 S PELLING *District list beginning in January *List home on Fridays and tests on the following Fridays

7 M ATH ** Whole group lessons: Math Expressions (homework) Rubric scores 4 exceeds, 3 at grade, 2 below, 1 considerably below **Daily Routine: Working with numbers and math vocabulary ** Problem Solvers: Word problems and Habits of Mind Rubric scores: 3, 2, 1, 0 **Math Fluency: Timed tests 90 seconds: Addition/subtraction through 10, beginning the second trimester. Pass= 90% or better

9 T ECHNOLOGY FOR S CHOOL AND H OME Raz Kids - interactive reading tool for students to practice reading fluency and comprehension. The students have a log in and a password to get into their reading account. Dreambox - DreamBox Learning is an online software provider that focuses on mathematics education at the elementary and middle school level. It is adaptive, meaning it modifies the material in response to student performance.

10 D AILY F OLDERS Please have students bring to school daily. Put correspondence for teacher, office, bus passes, lunch money in folder. Keep Daily Behavior and Homework Report in folder. Your student’s behavior (color coded star) and homework for the night is recorded on the sheet.

11 H OMEWORK Read for 20 minutes each night. Students can read on their own and be read to or listen to reading. Read At Home book program – a book at your child’s independent reading level is sent home. When the book is returned a new book is sent home. Starts late September / early October. Math homework – nightly to every other night. One page that focuses on our lesson from that day. For each unit a packet is sent home. The packet is due at the end of the unit.

12 W ATER B OTTLES AND S NACKS Students can have snacks at morning and afternoon recesses. Rainy day recess (indoor) we will not have a snack due to student allergies. Water bottles can be kept in the classroom. Please only bottles with drinking spouts to prevent spills. Only water – no juice, sports drinks, milk, etc…

13 V OLUNTEERS Much needed and appreciated. Volunteers must be cleared through Tahoma School District.
