Common Core State Standards and College and Career Readiness Standards Standards - what students should know and be able to do Common Core State Standards English Language Arts and Mathematics –Developed by several states –Adopted by 45 states –Aligned with College and Career Readiness Standards (skills and understandings that students must demonstrate)

Why Common Core State Standards and College and Career Readiness Standards are Important About 60% of jobs nationwide will require some type of postsecondary education by 2018 More Louisiana jobs are requiring a postsecondary education; of those 69% require vocational training, certification, or associate degree 31% require bachelor degree

Highlights of the English Language Arts Standards Reading of informational and literary texts Application of literacy skills in content areas Reading of increasingly complex texts Use of evidence from text in writing and speaking Emphasis on academic vocabulary

English Language Arts Standards Example Grade 9 Literacy Standard in History: Compare and contrast findings presented in a text to those from other sources, noting when the findings support or contradict previous explanations or accounts Assignment: Select a case that is scheduled to come before the U.S. Supreme Court. Use the text of the U.S. Constitution and at least 2 other sources to support 2 decisions the court could make: one arguing for the case and the other against it. Support your arguments using the information you gathered.

There are three people in the family. They want equal shares of the pizza. What part of a pizza will each person get?
