2 Common Core State Standards Fractions ▪ Understand that a fraction is part of a whole and is broken into equal parts ▪ Understand a fraction as a number on a number line, represent fractions on a number line diagram ▪ Explain equivalence of fractions and compare fractions by reasoning about their sizes ▪ Express whole numbers as fractions and fractions as whole numbers ▪ Compare two fractions with the same numerator or the same denominator

3 Key Vocabulary Terms ▪ Numerator – the top number in a fraction, it shows how many parts we have. ▪ Denominator – the bottom number in a fraction, it shows how many equal parts the item is divided into ▪ Number Line – a line on which numbers are marked at equal spaces ▪ Equivalent Fractions – different fractions that name the same number
