Stranded! Desert Island Adventure
2
What’s going on? Imagine you have been stranded on a desert island. There is no obvious source of food, no shelter, no signs of human life (that doesn’t mean they don’t exist!) and no one to keep you company. Now imagine you had a bag in which you had luckily packed 5 items that could be useful in such a situation and 3 additional items that may or may not be so helpful. Luckily the island has a fresh water spring so you have plenty to drink!
3
Today’s activity From a range of possible choices select the 5 items that you would find useful and the 3 you think you would also have with you. Explain what they would be used for and how they could help you – make sure you are detailed in your explanation Explain what you would do for food, shelter etc. to keep you alive until you are rescued. Make sensible choices to increase your chances of survival! Present your work in a style of your choice.
4
Select 5 items, only one can be electronic. GPS torch mobile phone fishing rod binoculars compass sleeping bag Netbook (12 hrs power) cutlery smart phone tools matches
5
Your 3 items should be realistic things, like the following items string notebook pen or pencil snacks flask or water bottle mp3 player game books
6
Additional activities Use the internet to research stories of survival: how did people survive, what did they eat etc. Design a shelter using items you might find in a deserted location: wood, reeds, leaves, rocks etc. Use Autoshapes on PowerPoint, Google Sketchup or BlockCad to create a visual representation of your ideas. Using the internet for research if necessary, create a news report about a rescue from a remote location (this does not need to be based on fact).
