College is Better than High School The Bottom Line: Going to college means more responsibility and harder work! But… with that responsibility comes more fun, freedom, and opportunities!

How Do I Get to College? Wanting to Go to College is Different than Being PREPARED to GO! Why? You get accepted into college primarily based on what you do in the first three years of high school!!!

How Do I Get to College? Getting Into College Is More Competitive Than Ever! In order to go to a quality college, there are four areas in which a student should excel:

How Do I Get to College? College To Do List (page 15 of CW packet) 1.Grade Point Average (GPA) 2.ACT/SAT Score (Taken during the spring of junior year) 3.Extracurricular activities (after school jobs, community service, leadership, involvement in school clubs) 4.Coursework: 4 years of math, science, English, and history; 3 years of a foreign language; AP and honors classes whenever possible!

How Do I Get to College? The Bottom Line: There is NO time to waste! Waiting until junior or senior year to get serious about school is a MISTAKE!

How Do I Get to College? Getting Into College Is A Challenge It is difficult to do this alone! Talking to an intelligent counselor, teacher, or parent can be helpful in this process!

Reason #2: Communication

These are only a few of over 300 million Spanish speakers in the world! Countries whose official language includes Spanish are colored red.

In the United States alone, there are over 52 million Spanish speakers (2010)

Reason #3: Other Classes Spanish is a Romance language that comes from Latin. So knowing Spanish will help in classes like anatomy, or if you plan on working in the medical field. Many Spanish words are cognates, and can help you improve your vocabulary in English. This will help you to improve your scores on tests like the SAT.

Reason #4: Better Job and More $$$$$

There are great benefits to being bilingual! Give yourself job security by having a valuable skill- speaking two languages! Bilingual people are more marketable and have more career choices (and can make more money!)- as an interpreter, teacher, translator, reporter, tour guide, flight attendant, social worker… the list goes on! In the business world: Sell your product or service to over 35 million Spanish speakers in the U.S., and to over 300 million people worldwide

In any job, knowing Spanish can open the door to more opportunities… “I work for a public relations firm, so I pitch ideas to television stations and newspapers throughout Chicago. I wish I knew Spanish, because without it I am unable to share stories with any of the Spanish TV stations or Spanish papers in the city. I have to leave that up to my bilingual coworkers.” --Kelcy Hale, monolingual

Reason #5: While learning a new language, you will also learn about new cultures … Try their FOOD!

And learn their DANCES! Tango! Flamenco!

You can get started now, right here in North Carolina … Visit the National Museum of Mexican Art Eat at Latin American and Spanish restaurants Rent a Spanish or Latin American movie
