The city is referred to as New York City or the City of New York to distinguish it from the State of New York, of which it is a part Its nicknames are: The Big Apple, the Melting Pot, „city that never sleeps“ The city is made up of 5 boroughs – Manhattan, The Bronx, Staten Island, Brooklyn and Queens ( single city since 1898)

13 New York City Dutch trading post (New Amsterdam) in 1626 The city and its surroundings came under English control in 1664, the English gained New Amsterdam (New York) in exchange for Dutch control of Run (Indonesian island). After that it was renamed after the Duke of York Many immigration waves (Ireland, south of the U.S., Europe, Asia) in 19th and 20th century Nearly 3,000 people died as a result of the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center and many more were injured in the disaster on 11 September 2001
