They are used to prevent crabgrass from appearing in summer lawns.  Pre-emergent herbicides are applied to lawns in the spring and fall to prevent the germination of weed seeds. They will not affect any established plant. In the spring, they should be applied early to mid March and no later than early April if second treatment is suggested.  Pre-emergent herbicides must be applied at a critical time. If they are applied to the soil too early, they get washed too deep into the soil or washed away by rainwater. If they are applied too late, the key enzyme inhibited is no longer active. The best control requires a second application about 6-8 weeks later. This provides coverage in mid-late summer when crabgrass can still germinate.

© 2015 ARCO Lawn Equipment For Discussion Purposes Only Feed and Iron  Nitrogen is a “macro” feed for the leaves of your grass plant. Iron is an added organic feed that helps give the grass a VERY Dark green color.  Assuming your grass is fairly green and healthy already, you can add a light dose of iron as a way of achieving a richer, deeper blue-green color. This is will surely set your lawn apart in the neighborhood. In fact, it is iron that makes Kentucky Blue Grass, “blue.” Iron can also be used to correct soil deficiencies (nitrogen gives the lawn a greening but also pushes growth) If your turf grass looks dull yellow, chances are a good dose of iron will help restore it.  Iron feed should be applied in April to green up the grass during the growing season, and in August when the grass may find itself losing the “green luster” it had throughout the season.

© 2015 ARCO Lawn Equipment For Discussion Purposes Only Weed & Feed (broadleaf weed control)  Broadleaf weed control often referred to as “Weed & Feed,” Is utilized to prevent and eliminate broadleaf weeds in spring while giving another application of nitrogen or “feed” in the process.  Later in the spring, some weeds have likely appeared, especially broad-leaf weeds such as dandelions. The best weed and feed for a late-spring application is one that has a post-emergent herbicide that will fall on the weed leaves and kill them.  Application time for the weed and feed product is in May when the soil temperatures have been warm enough for the broadleaf weeds to start growing. Applications before this time may not be effective. There are also additional “spray on” applications available for spot treatments throughout the year or in “heavily weeded” areas.

© 2015 ARCO Lawn Equipment For Discussion Purposes Only Grub Control ( & surface feeders)  Grub control is an application that is a MUST HAVE for anyone seriously interested in the look of their lawn. White grubs are the larvae of Japanese beetles, June beetles, or masked chafer beetles. If your grass turns brown and pulls up easily in July and August, your grass may be infested with grubs.  Grubs cause damage to lawns by feeding on the roots of grass. Grubs are also the natural food for moles. Moles are one of the fastest ways to destroy an otherwise healthy lawn. Surface feeders can open wounds in the leaf of the grass and make it more prone to disease.  Grub controls are most effective on immature grubs. For most species and our location this means June or July is the prime time to treat with an insecticide.

© 2015 ARCO Lawn Equipment For Discussion Purposes Only Winterizer  Cool season grasses grow differently than their warm season cousins. The majority of their annual nutrients are taken in during the fall months making lawn winterization very important. Winterizer is high in both “macro” and “micro” nutrients in order to sustain the grass through the harsh winter.  In the fall, cool season grasses are taking on large amounts of nutrients to overcome summer stress and to get them through the winter. In addition, these grasses are programmed to use stored nutrients to break winter dormancy in spring. As much as seventy-five percent of the total annual nitrogen requirement is obtained in the fall. Therefore, fall lawn winterization is the best way to deliver the needed nutrients to your grass. Cool weather grasses will continue to take in and store nutrients far after the last cutting and well into the winter.  Application for winterizer therefore, is best to apply in mid to late fall when the temperatures start to drop off from the HOT summer.
