2 Objective: Students will understand the events of the Civil War.

3  Secession followed election of Lincoln- November 1860  Seven southern states secede before first battle  SC, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Texas  The first shots- Fort Sumter in SC  Lincoln called on Union volunteers & received overwhelming support  Four more slave states withdraw from the Union  Virginia, Arkansas, NC, Tennessee  Both sides expected a short war

7 ADVANTAGESDISADVANTAGES  Big population  Industrialized- produced more ammunition, arms, medical supplies  Larger railroad network  Small, well-organized navy  Established government  Leadership of Lincoln  Must travel farther to reach battles  Fighting in enemy territory  Difficult to find good military leader

8 ADVANTAGESDISADVANTAGES  Fighting for survival– more passion for the war  Strong military leaders (Robert E. Lee)  Strategic advantages– a defensive war on familiar ground  Smaller population  No navy – vulnerable to naval blockades  New, inexperienced government  Very little industrialization (supplies)

14 UNIONCONFEDERACY Anaconda Plan  To coil around the South- squeeze it to death, like a snake  Naval Blockade  Get control of the Mississippi River to split Confederacy  Do enough damage to break Union’s will to fight  Get military support from Britain and France (they rely on southern cotton)

15  With your partner, look and see how the Union and the Confederacy compared with one another. Which had the advantages? Disadvantages?  Use pages 339-340 in your textbook along with your prior knowledge of the regions to complete the chart on your notes sheet.
