2 Overview of Environmental Engineering and Management Program Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur M. Tech. (4 semester: Two semesters taught followed by a thesis work) The Environmental Engineering and Management (EEM) Program at the Department of Civil Engineering is one of the oldest and well recognized academic programs in environmental management in the country and abroad since its inception in 1998. In addition to academic activities, the EEM group provides major environmental services. It has produced environmental engineers who are now leading professionals in water treatment and pollution control. Over 250 masters and 30 doctoral students have graduated. Several sponsored and consulting projects in areas like health-based air quality index, atmospheric dispersion of pollutants, air pollution monitoring and control, drinking water supply, heavy metal pollution, industrial waste treatment, biological processes, biosorption virology, environmental systems modeling, and software's have been completed. Program’s Objective Primarily to meet the growing human resource requirements of high quality to provide leadership in various sectors. These sectors are: policy and planning, implementation and legal aspects, sustainable industrial development, environment-friendly infrastructure management, resource cleanup through remediation of land, water and air resources, over and above the traditional 'end of pipe' pollution control measures. Faculty Core (7)  Environmental Engineering group (Department of Civil Engineering) Associated (8)  Environmental economics  Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Engineering Geosciences

3 Students Intake -20 Background CE: 60%, CHE: 10%, ME and AG 15%, Sciences (BT, Maths, Physics) : 15% Courses: Core  Advanced Mathematics for Civil Engineers  Physicochemical Principles and Processes  Ecological and Biological Principles and Processes  Air Pollution and its Control Elective  Environmental Quality and Pollution Monitoring Techniques  Principals of Environmental Economics and Management  Special Topics in Environmental Engineering and Management (3 modules from a set of about half dozen) (Principals of Env. Management, Solid and Hazardous Waste Management, Introduction environmental Toxicology, Climate Change, Bioremediation, Environmental Risk Analysis, Computations of Environmental Fluid Mechanics, Design Principals of Air Pollution Abatement equipment, environmental Geochemical Tracers, Engine Emission Control)  Modeling of Natural Systems  Principles and Design of Water Supply and Treatment Systems  Principles and Design of Wastewater Treatment and Disposal Systems  Atmospheric Physics and Chemistry

4 Experience from last decade Curricula  Hard core training in environmental engineering  Mathematics was introduced as many students who did not have sufficient math background could not cope  Right blend of experimental and modeling based thesis  Synthesis is missing Research  Research based on master thesis had little impact  Intra-group collaboration but little inter-group or across the departments collaboration Industry partnership  Very little mostly one way by providing consulting  Industry also has not kept pace with the new knowledge because of poor implementation of regulations  Vicious circle leading to poor placement record recently (partly also due to economic slowdown) Faculty Recruitment  Only through departments  Not through programs or centers A new experiment! Merging the program with a newly founded Center-CESE

5 Center for Environmental Science and Engineering The Centre for Environmental Science & Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur is conceived with the specific objective of creating an interdisciplinary research facility integrating the fields of engineering, science and medicine to address environmental issues. Themes  Environmental Remediation Technology  Biology and Health  Advance Chemical Trace Analysis  Atmospheric Particles Technology  Nano-Bio Environmental Technology Associated Faculty Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Bioscience and Bioengineering, Chemistry and Mechanical Engineering
