9 Natural disasters caused by the weather Hurricane/typhoon Hurricane/typhoon = a tropical storm with strong winds, moves over water Tornado Tornado = an extremely violent storm, air that spins very quickly and causes a lot of damage Flood Flood = after snowmelt or heavy rains Drought Drought = a long period of dry weather when there is not enough water for plants and animals to live Blizzard Blizzard = a severe (= very bad,extreme) snow storm Avalanche Avalanche = a large mass of snow, ice, and rocks that falls down the side of a mountain

12 Seasons of the year Spring – begins on March 21 Thaw changeable unpredictable Thaw (= snow and ice melt) sets in, temperature rises, changeable and unpredictable weather, showers, rainbow, drizzle, heavy rains and thaw cause floods awakens Nature awakens, animals give birth blossom to their youngs, trees blossom, bloom flowers bloom (tulips, snowdrops, dandelions) plantfertilisesoil People work in their gardens: plant, fertilise soil Bonfire Chinese lanterns Bonfire (= a large outdoor fire burning for a party, Chinese lanterns) night on April 30, May celebrations

13 Seasons of the year Summer – begins on June 21 scorching dew mist Bright clear days, scorching (= extremely hot) sun, morning dew (= small drops of water that form outdoors during the night) and mist (= fog), refreshing breeze crash thunder flash lightning Storms with a crash of thunder and a flash of lightning (it pours, hails, strong wind) People have holidays – relax, hike, camp etc. Harvesting Harvesting (= gathering crops) and picking strawberries, blueberries, mushrooms

14 Seasons of the year Autumn (Fall in US) – begins on September 23 Sun rises later and sets earlier hoarfrost sleets Chilly mornings, hoarfrost (= a thin layer of ice), damp, foggy, muddy, it rains cats and dogs, puddles in the streets, it sleets (= rain with snow) Indian summer Indian summer = a period of warm weather Maplesbirchesoaks shed bareconifers larches Maples, birches, oaks turn yellow, red, brow and shed their leaves, turn bare but conifers remain green (not larches) People harvest fruit and vegetables Halloween, All Saints Day, Thanksgiving Day

15 Seasons of the year Winter – begins on December 21 Cold, snowy, icy, frosty weather Icicles snowdrift slush freeze up slippery Icicles (= a long pointed piece of ice hanging from a roof), blizzard, avalanche, snowdrift (= a deep mass of snow formed by the wind), thaw, slush (= partly melted snow), ponds and lakes freeze up, roads and streets are slippery sledding Popular activities are ice skating, skiing, sledding, building snowmen and igloos, snowballs throwing snowballs St. Nicholas Eve, Christmas and New Year celebrations
