Vision What future success looks like Goals Steps to your vision Planning Road map to goals

SMART Goals Goals are the steps to a vision. To ensure goals effectively lead to a vision, we use SMART Goals. –Specific –Measurable –Attainable –Relevant –Timely Example Vision: Become a doctor.

Specific A goal must be specific to ensure a clear understanding. –If a goal has multiple interpretations, which do you choose? Example: “I want to go to school for something in the medical field.” –What kind of school? To become a radiologist, a dentist, etc.? –This goal is unspecific—how can we improve it?

Measurable A goal needs to be clear when it is accomplished. –Without it, a goal could never get done, or be accomplished incorrectly. Example: “I want to save some money to attend UW-Parkside this fall.” –How much money does Parkside cost? How will you know when you have enough saved? –“Some money” is immeasurable—how can we refine this goal?

Attainable A goal needs to be realistic. –Attempting to fulfill an impossible goal won’t help attain a vision. Example: “I want to cure the common cold.” –Curing the common cold is impossible; attempting this goal would stop you indefinitely from moving on. –How can we improve this goal?

Relevant Goals need to pertain to your vision. –Why bother to work on something that won’t help fulfill your vision? Example: “I want to watch medical shows.” –Is House so realistic? How would watching TV drama help become a doctor? –Can we make a goal more relevant to becoming a doctor?

Timely A goal needs to have a deadline, a date to accomplish it by. –If there is no due date, goals may never be completed. Example: “I want to get an assistant job in a hospital as soon as possible.” –“As soon as possible” may quickly devolve into “whenever I feel like it,” which won’t help your vision. –What can we do to fix this goal?

Vision Successfully complete a marathon.
