ABET Accreditation Prof. Adam Fontecchio
2
WHY DOES ACCREDITATION MATTER? It shows: Commitment to improving the educational experience Use of best practices and innovation in education Our graduates meet educational requirements necessary to enter their profession Industry, government, and academic institutions require standards of quality education Department of Education requires that schools participating in federal student aid programs be accredited Some employers require accredited degrees to hire employees Accreditation required in order for credits to be transferred WHY DOES IT MATTER? | 2
3
WHY DOES ASSESSMENT AND CONTINUOUS QUALITY IMPROVEMENT MATTER? Keeps the curriculum relevant Provides data for course/curricula reform Demonstrates effectiveness of program We are obligated to students and as professionals in academia we must offer the best possible degrees we can We want our degrees to be competitive in the workforce Gives us the opportunity to correct mistakes in the curriculum Pre-requisite structure Fundamental skill Maintain continuity in the educational stream when changes are implemented WHY DOES IT MATTER? | 3

WHAT IS ABET? Comprised of thirty-one (31) professional and technical societies (AIChE, ASME, IEEE, NCEES, MRS, ASEE, etc.) Develop program criteria Provide leadership & governance Recruit & assign evaluators Four (4) commissions: Applied Science (ASAC) Computing (CAC) Engineering (EAC) Technology Education (TAC) Encourages quality assurance and innovation in education Looks at students, curriculum, faculty, facilities, and support WHAT IS ABET? | 5

TERMS AND DEFINITIONS Program Educational Objective (PEOs) Broad statements that describe what graduates are expected to attain within a few years after graduation Student Outcomes (SOs) What students are expected to know and be able to do by the time of graduation Performance Indicators Specific, measurable statements articulating the key characteristics of the outcome Assessment Identification, collection, and preparation of data to evaluate attainment of SOs and PEOs using direct, indirect, quantitative and qualitative measures Evaluation Interpretation of data and evidence accumulated through assessment, determining the extent to which SOs and PEOs are being attained WHAT IS ABET? | 10

WHAT IS NEEDED FROM YOU? Samples of student work (excellent, medium, and poor) from courses you have taught Copy of any textbooks/course material you have used in courses you have taught Self studies must contain: Curriculum vitae for EVERY faculty member (140+) Syllabi for EVERY undergraduate departmental course offered in the AY 2012-2013 (~500) ADDITIONAL ITEMS | 14

17
ADDITIONAL ITEMS | 17 Departments do not necessarily have designated or ample spaces to collect student work or course materials ABET designates the format and content of CVs and syllabi Formatting hundreds of syllabi and CVs takes a lot of time AEFIS supports automatic formatting of both but is under-utilized (https://coe.drexel.goaefis.net/) WHY IS THIS AN ISSUE?
