To protect 6,000 kms of coastline of India.
Notification issued under the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986 on
Being a statutory notification it has the force of law.

4. 500 metres from High Tide Line for sea front
What is CRZ ?
500 metres from High Tide Line for sea front
100 metres or width of the river whichever is less for rivers, backwaters, estuaries, etc.
Backwater islands
Tidal influenced water bodies which are having 5 ppt salinity concentration

5. Prohibited activities
Setting up of industries including expansion of existing industry
Manufacture or handling oil storage or disposal of hazardous substance
Setting up and expansion of fish processing units
Land reclamation

6. Prohibited activities
Setting up and expansion of units or mechanism for disposal of wastes and effluents
Discharge of untreated waste and effluents
Dumping of city or town wastes
Ports and harbour projects in high eroding areas

7. Permitted industrial activities
Industries which require water front and directly needing foreshore facilities.
Ports, harbours , jetties, quays, wharves, erosion control measures, breakwaters, pipelines, lighthouses, navigational safety facilities, coastal police stations, like.

8. Prohibited activities
Reclamation for commercial purposes
Mining of sand , rocks and other substrata materials-
Drawal of ground waster and constructions related thereto
Dressing or altering the sand dunes hills, natural feathers including landscape changes
Construction activities in CRZ-1 except those permitted

9. Permitted industrial activities
Projects of Department of Atomic Energy
Facilities for generating power by non-conventional energy sources and setting up of desalination plants in areas not categorised as CRZ-I(i) based on an impact assessment study including social impacts
Green field airport in Navi Mumbai
Re-construction, repair works of dwelling units of local communities in accordance with local and country planning regulations.

10. Classification of lands for constructions
CRZ-I – Ecologically sensitive areas
CRZ-II- Developed areas
CRZ-III – Areas that are undisturbed
CRZ-IV – 12 mts towards sea, backwater islands

11. Classification of Coastal Regulation Zones
Coastal Regulation Zone – I (CRZ-1)
Ecologically sensitive areas
No construction in these areas
Mangrove areas

12. Coastal Regulation Zone – II (CRZ-2) – Developed Areas
Construction is possible on the landward side of existing road or buildings subject to conditions
Municipal areas of Kerala comes in this category
Marine Drive, Kochi

13. Coastal Regulation Zone – III (CRZ-3)
Areas that are not developed and not ecologically important
Upto 200 metres No Development Zone
Certain activities are permitted
All Panchayats in Kerala comes in this category

14. Coastal Regulation Zone – IV (CRZ-4)
Under the 2011 notification the backwaters and backwater islands are included in this category
For island the distance rule is 50 metres or width of the river whichever is less

15. Coastal Zone Management Plan
CZMP identifying and classifying the CRZ areas in the state
Old CZMP has to be redrawn. Till such time old will prevail
Preparing it public participation is very much essential
