2 New Year’s Day Romans originally dedicated New Year's Day to Janus, the god of gates, doors, and beginnings. Christmas Day (Old English: Crīstesmæsse, meaning "Christ's Mass") Christmas is an annual commemoration of the birth of Jesus Christ and a widely observed cultural holiday, celebrated by billions of people around the world.

3 A Christmas church service, which happens the night of Christmas Eve, is attended by members of the Orthodox church. Even the President of Russia has begun attending these solemn, beautiful services in Moscow. A meatless meal may be prepared for Christmas Eve, which is eaten only after the appearance of the first star in the sky.

4 Late family dinners, sparkling wine and fireworks at midnight are some of the traditional ways of celebrating New Year’s Day in Russia. New Year’s Day is a family holiday for many Russians. Dinner usually starts late on December 31. Traditional meals include Russian salad, herring and sparkling wine.
