1. Do Now Do you know exactly where you want to go to college? If no, what are some things that will sway your opinion? If yes, what made you decide on this choice? FQ: What different college options exist for me?

2. Public and Private Colleges Public colleges are funded by local and state governments and usually offer lower tuitions than private colleges, especially for students who live in the state where the college is. Private colleges rely mainly on tuition, fees & private sources of funding. These schools can give large financial aid packages for students.

3. For-Profit Colleges These are businesses that offer many degree programs which typically prepare students for a specific career. They usually have higher costs, so you could graduate with more debt. Credits that you get may not transfer to other colleges, so check with each college.

4. Four-year and two-year colleges Four-year colleges offer four-year programs that lead to bachelor’s degree. Two-year colleges have programs that last two years that give you a certificate or an associate degree. These are community colleges, technical colleges & career colleges.

5. Liberal Arts Colleges These colleges offer many courses in literature, history, languages, mathematics & sciences. Most are private & have 4 year programs that lead to bachelor’s degrees. From here, you can get a career or go to graduate school for an advanced degree.

6. Universities Universities are bigger than colleges.

7. Community Colleges Community colleges give you a 2 year, associate degree. They prepare you to go into a field that only requires that or transfer to a 4 year college to get a bachelor’s degree. They can be much more affordable than other types of schools.

8. Ivy League Universities There are only 8 schools in the country that have this title: Brown University, Columbia University,Cornell University, Dartmouth College, Harvard University,Princeton University, the University of Pennsylvania, and Yale University. These schools are extremely competitive and difficult to get into. On average they accept no more than 12% of those who apply. The highlight to these schools is that they are need-blind which means that they will help you pay for a majority, of the costs if you are accepted.

9. Vocational-Technical & Career Colleges Vocational-technical and career collegesVocational-technical and career colleges offer specialized training in a particular industry or career. Possible programs of study include the culinary arts, firefighting, dental hygiene and medical-records technology. These colleges usually offer certificates or associate degrees.

10. Colleges with a special focus Some colleges focus on a specific interest or student population. These include: ●Arts colleges ●Single-sex colleges ●Religiously affiliated colleges ●Specialized-mission colleges

11. Arts colleges Art colleges and conservatories focus on the arts. In addition to regular course work, these colleges provide training in areas such as photography, music, theater or fashion design. Most of these colleges offer associate or bachelor's degrees in the fine arts or a specialized field. Single-sex colleges All four-year public colleges, and most private colleges, are coed. But there are some private colleges that are specifically for men or for women. Religiously affiliated colleges Some private colleges are connected to a religious faith. The connection may be historic only, or it may affect day-to-day student life.

12. Specialized - mission Colleges Historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) focus on educating African American students. Hispanic-serving institutions (HSIs) are colleges where at least 25 percent of the full-time undergraduate students are Hispanic. HBCUs and HSIs may offer programs, services and activities targeted to the underrepresented students they serve. Examples: Morehouse College, Spellman College, Boricua College, Dominican College, etc.
