2 TOPIC:Topic 2: Human Resources LESSON TITLE:Motivation Theories COMPETENCY FOCUS: Research (I1): you will develop your skills in research as throughout this topic, you will need to research the role of human resource in HRM, the different job roles that exist within an organisation and also the recruitment & selection documentation that the organisation uses to help recruit the right people for their vacant job roles. 3 Motivation Motivation: the intrinsic and extrinsic factors that stimulate people in to taking actions that lead to achieving a goal. Intrinsic motivation: internal satisfaction you get from achieving a goal. Extrinsic motivation: external rewards given to you for completing a task.

4 Indicators of Poor Motivation -Absenteeism -Lateness -Poor performance -Accidents -High labour turnover -Grievances -Customer complaints

5 Motivation Theories Taylor’s Scientific Management -First person to analyse worker motivation -Wanted to increase worker productivity -‘Scientific Management’ still used today -Studies US manufacturing industry -Identified 7 steps to improving worker productivity.

8 Motivation Theories Herzberg’s Two Factor Theory -Conducted research on 200 professionally qualified workers -Herzberg’s theory has had the greatest impact -2 categories: -Motivators factors (factors that give workers job satisfaction i.e. recognition) -Hygiene factors (Factors that can lead workers to become dissatisfied i.e. pay, conditions) - Now often linked to ‘Job Enrichment’
