3 Today’s Objective… Today we will describe Napoleon’s rise to power using this lecture.

4 Napoleon Bonaparte Was born in 1769 on the Mediterranean island of Corsica When he was 9 years old his parents sent him to military school in northern France. At the age of 16, he finished school and became a lieutenant in the artillery. When the revolution began he joined the Revolutionary army.

6 His Claim to Fame In October 1795, Napoleon was told to defend the delegates of the National Assembly against the Royalists. –He greeted the Royalists with cannons and within minutes the Royalists were forced out of France. –Napoleon is now considered the savior of the Republic

7 Military Career Napoleon was very successful leading his troops against the Austrian forces as well as many others. –He was a famous general that was considered a hero to the people of France. He did suffer a defeat in Egypt but was clever enough to keep the defeat out of the newspapers.

8 France was a Mess The National Convention had lost control of France. The French people no longer trusted their government and the only reason that the government had any control was because of the power of the army France need a strong leader! –A French statesman convinces Napoleon that he should take over France.

9 Napoleon and Josephine Napoleon knew that if he wanted to succeed in France he need a rich and influential wife. Josephine Tascher was a noble woman who barely survived the revolution.

10 Josephine and her two children had a hard time after the revolution. To survive Josephine was a mistress to men who were in powerful positions. –This is when she met Napoleon and the married soon after.

11 The Plan While Napoleon was meeting with influential people to discuss his role in the government, Josephine was using her connections with the rich directors to influence their decisions.

12 Coup d'état On November 9, 1799 Napoleon was put in charge of the military. He led his troops to the national legislature and drove out the members who opposed him out of the chamber. The legislature voted Napoleon dictator of France. –This sudden government take over is called a coup d’état.
