3 Perianal Abscess Pain – exacerbated by movement and increased perineal pressure from sitting or defecation On digital rectal examination (DRE), a fluctuant, indurated mass may be encountered. Risk factors include diabetes mellitus, Crohn's disease, chronic steroid treatment and other conditions leading to immunosupression.

5 Diagnostic Workup The diagnosis can be usually made with physical exam coupled with an adequate medical history. (Pain being the most common presenting symptom.) Imaging studies such as CT and MRI may be recommended for complex or atypical presentations.
