A mass will balance if the weight vector through its centre of mass is supported by, and passes through its base. Explain each of the following.

Stand against a wall with your feet spaced apart.

Move both feet until they are together against the wall.

What happens and why does it happen?

centre of mass pivot point

Does a person’s centre of mass remain stationary as they walk? Explain what happens.

The CoM will move so it is always above the foot that is on the ground.

Why does a gymnast extend their leg in this situation?

By moving their leg a gymnast can change the position of their CoM very easily and quickly.

Why do tightrope walkers use long poles? (or why do you extend your arms when balancing?)

Moving the pole (or your arms) will change the position of the CoM to facilitate balancing.

Would this stance be possible? Explain
