Travel Motivators (Incentives) and Barriers There are many reasons that prompt people to want to travel. These reasons are travel motivators or incentives and can include needing to travel for relaxation and recreation, for work or adventure or to visit with family and friends, etc. The downside is that even though we might be highly motivated to take trips, there are often 1 or more Travel Barriers or reasons that can prevent us from being able to travel!

We all have budgets. The cost of travel competes with our other financial commitments. To travel we must have enough disposable income (money we have left over after all of our bills and financial obligations are met). For example, when fuel costs are low or the Canadian dollar is up, travel increases. When fuel costs are high and our dollar is not competitive then travel is reduced.

People have jobs, family and other commitments that limit the time available to travel.

Poor health may keep people from traveling. As we age the ability to get travel insurance can become more difficult as well.

Weather patterns can hinder travel. Severe winter weather keeps some people from traveling to locations in the Northern Hemisphere. Tourists to the tropics usually avoid the rainy season(s). Major natural weather events such as hurricanes, forest fires, earthquakes can also influence where and when we travel.

Parents with young children may not travel because of the cost and inconvenience. They may just avoid certain types of travel such as long flights over seas or whitewater rafting. Older generations may not have the ability to afford to travel. Often they struggle to find transportation modes to complete their travel.

Some people just simply have other interests and choose not to travel. Often times they spend their disposable income on other hobbies.

Political unrest or high crime rates in certain locations discourage people from traveling there. An example of this is traveling to Iraq or Mexico.
