7.  Early in the American Revolutionary War, the island was captured from General George Washington by the British in the Battle of Long Island, the largest battle of the entire war. After the British victory on Long Island many Patriots fled, leaving mostly Loyalists behind.The island remained a British stronghold until the end of the war.
