2 I. Effects of Phonics Instruction with Storybooks on Young Learners’ Word Recognition: Action Research Three research questions are presented as follows: 1. What are the differences of word recognition effectiveness between phonics instruction and phonics instruction with storybooks in Action I? 2. Is there any significant improvement in the English phonics performance of the experimental group in Action II? 3. Is there any significant difference in the English learning attitudes toward English learning for the experimental group and the control group after the Phonics Instruction with storybooks?

3 II. Effects of Socioeconomic Status on Senior High Graduates’ English Proficiency 1. Is there a bimodal distribution in terms of senior high graduates ’ English writing scores on the GSAT in Tainan City and Tainan County? 2. To what extent do family background characteristics have effects on the English proficiency of senior high graduates in terms of graduates ’ gender, parents ’ SES, and parental attitudes? 3. Do parental attitudes vary a lot from male graduates to female graduates? 4. Do parent ’ s different SES types have an influence on their attitudes toward children ’ s English learning?

Effects of Peer-Tutoring of English-major Students Conducting English Remedial Teaching to Non-English Majors of Southern Taiwan Universities of Technology Based on the above objectives, four research questions were developed: 1. Do non-English majors make much progress in their English abilities after the peer-tutoring remedial instruction? 2. What are tutors ’ attitudes towards the peer-tutoring remedial instruction program? 3. What are the tutors ’ problems and difficulties when they participate in the peer-tutoring remedial instruction program? 4. How could the peer-tutoring remedial instruction program be improved?
