Enzymes

Proteins that catalyse chemical reactions in living organisms

A molecule that helps a reaction but is not consumed itself

Protein, made of Amino Acids Specific, each enzyme helps in 1 reaction Increase the speed of chemical reaction Unchanged at the end of the reaction They work at a specific optimal temperature and acidity They can be destroyed by high temperatures Names usually end with –ase: Amylase, Peptidase, Lipase

To make reactions happen that would usually not happen

Enzyme and substrate fit like Lock and Key

It starts in your mouth Your saliva contains Amylase It digests (breaks down) Starch

Amylase breaks Starch down into Maltose

Important Enzymes Part of Body Name of Enzyme Optimal Temp/pH Reaction it Catalyzes MouthAmylase37/neutralStarch -> Maltose StomachPepsin37/ pH2Protein -> Poly peptides Produced in Pancreas active and Duodenum( part of small intestine) Pancreatic Amylase 37/NeutralStarch -> Maltose Maltase37/NeutralMaltose -> Glucose Peptidases37/NeutralPoly peptides -> Amino Acids Lipase37/NeutralFats (Lipids) -> Fatty acids & Glycerol
