3 Review What are the two metabolic systems discussed and how do they provide energy?

4 Cellular Respiration Provides energy to sustain intense activity for long periods of time. Examples include biathlon, marathons, entire soccer game etc. Process occurs in the mitochondria of cells and requires oxygen.

5 Cellular Respiration The overall equation for cellular respiration is: C 6 H 12 O 6 + 6O 2 +36ADP +36P → 6CO 2 + 36ATP +6H 2 O

6 Cellular Respiration Glycolysis occurs in the cytoplasm and creates two pyruvate molecules. Pyruvate molecules move into the mitochondria and are converted into acetyl CoA rather than lactic acid. The acetyl CoA molecules move into the Krebs cycle. Through a series of eight reactions, two ATP molecules as well as “high energy storing” molecules are produced. The final stage is called the Electron Transport Chain.

7 Electron Transport Stage This stage occurs in the matrix of the mitochondria. Electrons are removed from the “high energy storing” molecules produced in the Krebs cycle which results in free energy that is used to attach a phosphate group to ADP creating ATP.
