1 LESSON 1 HEALTH, ILLNESS AND DISEASES AS Health and Social Care

2 What will this unit be about... This unit begins by exploring the attitudes and understanding of the concepts of both health and ill health and how individuals and groups may view the concept of health differently, In developing this theme, an investigation is made into the importance of a selection of major factors affecting health and well being and the interrelationship between them. Finally, an examination is made of major preventative measures currently being taken to promote health and avoid illness.

3 By the end of this unit, you will be able to... 1. Identify and define concepts of ill health and health, 2. Identify and define the factors affecting health and ill health, 3. Identify and define the various immunisations against disease, 4. Identify and define the value of screening.

4 How will you be assessed.... In order to complete this unit, you will need to complete a portfolio containing a questionnaire and two reports.

5 Deadlines Section 1-4 drafts (purpose of the questionnaire, results, analysis and interrelationship between factors): Friday 30 th of September 2011 in the study centre @ 3- 4.30pm Section 5-6 (conclusion – evaluation) Friday 7 th of October in the study centre @ 3-4.30pm

6 What is health ? Defining health is a difficult task as it means different things to different people, However it is necessary to have a definition of the term health as we use the word in all sorts of HSC job titles,

7 WDYT Individually, write down your own personal definition of health and ill health

8 Health is….. Negatively defined as… NOT being ill, diseased or unwell Holistically defined as…. A state of complete physical, intellectual emotional and social well being. (PIES) Positively defined as… Being fit, feeling good, being the correct weight What is ‘Health’?

9 Well being More happy with how you feel mentally, socially and physically. Closer to a holistic definition. Technically we may be healthy but not have a sense of well being.

10 P.I.E.S Holistic definitions focus on positive aspects of all of the following elements : Physical Intellectual Emotional Social

11 Task Use the grid to provide examples of what you feel is involved in each aspect of good health

12 Good Physical Health A balanced diet Not being stressed (mentally fit) Exercising regularly Being physically fit Not being over/underweight Not smoking Drinking alcohol in moderation Drinking water (8 glasses per day) Not having an illness/disease

13 Good Intellectual Health Read, watch programmes to keep your brain stimulated Having a challenging/interesting job Having hobbies that keep you learning Having an education

14 Good Emotional Health Having successful relationships Having a loving supporting family Having a good set of friends Being happy in your job High self esteem Being happy with your appearance Not being stressed/depressed

15 Good Social Health Good social life Supporting group of friends Going to work/school/college Being able to hold a good conversation Hobbies Having a partner

16 Research Task + Homework Complete the handout which you have been given and find the definition for them. This is due in for next lesson.
