2 MEDIOS - project partly financed by The State Provincial Office of Southern Finland (2008- 2011) / ESF (European Social Fund) Metropolia Ammattikorkeakoulu is in charge (the participating organisation), Helsingin Kaupunginteatteri and m-cult are co-partners.

3 MEDIOS has three different sub-projects: -Digitales (Metropolia) -Script writing tool (HKT) -Flossmanuals (m-cult)

4 A short ”movie”, 1-3 minutes long  written by the author  spoken and recorded by the author  illustrated with the photos or drawings of the author  can include videos, music or animation made by the author DIGITALES What is it?

5 Digitale-method was developed in the US to record the memories of the members of communities www.storycenter.org The method based on workshops was developed In Europe. www.digi-tales.org DIGITALES

6 About Digital Storytelling ”Digital Storytelling takes the ancient art of oral storytelling and engages a palette of technical tools to weave personal tales using images, graphics, music and sound mixed together with the author's own story voice. Digital storytelling is an emerging art form of personal, heartful expression that enables individuals and communities to reclaim their personal cultures while exploring their artistic creativity. While the heart and power of the digital story is shaping a personal digital story about self, family, ideas, or experiences, the technology tools also invite writers and artists to think and invent new types of communication outside the realm of traditional linear narratives.” (http://www.digitales.us/about/index.php)

7 Aim: Anyone can do a short video about the subject the person finds important to him/herself DIGITALES

10 DIGITALES Example of a simple storyboard & illustration “When I was a child, I wasn’t behaving well. I was on my way to become a teenager with a lot of problems, BUT luckily I found an adult who put me on a right track. With him, I found sports and it might have saved me. I put my energy into training and I stopped doing stupid things. At the gym I also got new friends. Now I’m feeling great and I’m sure that I’m a better person. My life is in balance. I’m sorry for those that I hurt when I was younger, I surely deserve a slap in the face. But I hope that you can forgive me. I wish you all the best in your life!”

11 Technical requirements:  Computer (Movie Maker or other)  Microphone / other sound recorder (for ex. Zoom H2)  Scanner and/or digital camera  Memory stick / DVDs Other requirements:  Idea  Photos / drawings / paintings etc. (Notice: permission to use)  Imagination  Time (appr. 3 days) DIGITALES What is needed?

12  Sharing of the memories / experiences  Learning technical and storytelling skills  Expression of an opinion/idea (/self-expression)  Visual story (illustration for a text)  Learning/teaching tool (vs. group work at school)  Participation / empowerment = therapy tool for immigrants, mental patients, unemployed etc. What is it for? 13  People in a challenging situation can use the method to handle a personal issue  Writing a story can be therapeutic  Learning technical skills can be the most important thing to someone  Support of the group important  Experience of success when the work is finished Tool of empowerment DIGITALES

14  Technical problems and the availability of the machines  Lack of time / use of time (enough help, also technical)  Lack of commitment / motivation of the participants  Influence of the leader/teacher on the content  Method must be modified according to the target group DIGITALES Challenges!
