Mitosis Notes

Mitosis is cell replication. (Cells make a copy of themselves and split into 2 cells.) Cells go through mitosis to replace cells that have died or to make more cells so that you can grow.

VOCAB Chromosomes – pieces of DNA (when we can see them, they are shaped like an X because a chromosome is attached to its copy) Nucleus – the center of the cell that holds the DNA Spindles – string like material that moves chromosomes around Centrioles – the part of the cell that makes the spindles Identical – exactly the same

Interphase 1.Cell does all of its daily jobs. 2.DNA copies itself

Prophase 1.Spindles form between centrioles and centrioles move to ends of the cell. 2.Nucleus breaks down 3.Chromosomes twist and can be seen.

Metaphase 1. Chromosomes grab on to spindles and line up in the middle of the cell.

Anaphase 1. Chromosomes are pulled apart and pulled to the ends of the cell.

Telophase 1.Spindles break down 2.Nucleus forms again 3.Chromosomes untwist and can’t be seen anymore

Cytokinesis 1. Cell splits into 2 identical cells.

Result: 2 Identical sister cells

Cell Cycle Interphase Mitosis Cytokinesis Mitosis Prophase Metaphase Anaphase Telophase
