6 Fifth Amendment (Rights of the Accused)  Right to a grand jury hearing  No double jeopardy  No self-incrimination - right to remain silent - don’t have to testify  Presumed innocent; must be proven guilty  Must be paid if govt. takes property

7 Sixth Amendment (Criminal Trial Rights)  fair trial  speedy, public trial  impartial jury  hear the charges, time & place of the crime  hear & question witnesses  right to a lawyer

8 Seventh Amendment (Civil Trial Rights)  disputes between people or businesses  involve money, property, or family issues  right to a jury trial  judge cannot overrule the jury

9 Eighth Amendment (Bail and Punishments)  Pay bail to be out while awaiting trial  No excessive bail  No excessive fines, if guilty  No cruel and unusual punishment  definition changes with the times

10 Ninth Amendment  People have other rights not in the Constitution  Examples:  privacy  travel  work  move  get married

11 Tenth Amendment  Powers not given to the national govt. go to the states
