Citation and Internet Research Shortened version for Senior Project

Databases vs. Google Why use a database instead of Google? Databases are reliable; the information has already been screened No editor on the Internet; anyone can post a website without validity or authority Databases provide you with access to the same RESTRICTED professional journals and publications used by experts

Evaluating the Internet Evaluating your web source “.edu,.gov, and.com” What’s the difference? Use “quotes” in your search to narrow the search Check website authority, validity, authenticity. Who is author? How often is the information updated? Check website affiliation?

Valid Internet Sites to use RSS feeds for current news media Intute http://www.intute.ac.uk/ Clusty.com http://clusty.com/ Use host:gov to get government sites Use host:edu to get college/university research Calisphere http://www.calisphere.universityofcalifornia.edu/

Databases to use include: Napa/Solano County Databases EBSCO host/Student Research Center SIRS Researcher ProQuest Look for full-text in your search You need a valid library card or an E-card to access the databases. Cite Napa County Library as source.

A Whole Page of Information Click here to go to a Word Document with links To more Research Help

So now what? Citing Your Sources MLA format Websites to help Formatting in WORD Vintage Website links MLA is the Citation/Report format used at Vintage High Some websites include http://citationmachine.net/ http://www.easybib.com/ http://citationmachine.net/ http://www.easybib.com/ Noodletools: get login from library desk Vintage Style Sheet for Reports http://www.vhs.nvusd.k12.c a.us/vhs/Vintage_style_shee t.htm http://www.vhs.nvusd.k12.c a.us/vhs/Vintage_style_shee t.htm

What sources should I cite? Create a Works Cited for all information, quotes and paraphrasing USED in your paper Create a Works Consulted for all information you read or consulted in your research 1. Works Cited is the list of all works explicitly referred to in the paper. Works Consulted is a list of all works used by the writer, but not explicitly referred to. Be sure to find out which one the instructor wants. Some instructors want both. 2. Both Works Cited and Works Consulted are alphabetized, appear at the end of the paper, and include page numbers. 3. Entries on Works Cited and Works Consulted are not numbered. Entries are double-spaced. From: http://www.vhs.nvusd.k12.ca.us/vhs/Vintage_style_sheet.htm http://www.vhs.nvusd.k12.ca.us/vhs/Vintage_style_sheet.htm

Using WORD to Format your Works Cited Set hanging indent! Save your work often! Use alpha sort when completed.
