8 ESP 2012 and 2013 UPO Nov. 23 2012 8 ESP structure for 2012 Upgrade Coordination months pledged/allotted185/204 a)Working Group/Task Force Coordination18/12 b)Project Planning1/6 c)Reviews (CDR, R&D reviews etc)1/6 d)General R&D (under WG/TF, not within a detector project)79/36 e)Upgrade Performance Studies 1)MC/Reco development30/48 2)Trigger development and performance studies18/48 3)Forward Detector concept and performance studies25/24 4)Physics performance studies12/24 o Started to go through “acceptance” of pledges with WG/TF conveners. o There are obvious cases of detector specific work - will re-direct to those projects. o Will look for cases where work has been done but not pledged & encourage pledging. o Our estimate of 204 months was probably not too far off. For 2013 Re-evaluate categories and needs – see plans for 2013 in next slides – expect some increase above 204 Aim for 2012 closeout and proposal for 2013 ESP at next UPO

9 WBS and MOU MOU o Andrzej is preparing an overall MOU for the Phase 1 Upgrades (those beyond LS1). o Each project will have an MOU-addendum within this overall framework – preparing a template. o This will be one addendum per project, to be signed by all agencies working on the project. It will include – List of institutions with indication of areas of interest – WBS breakdown and cost table with funding by agency WBS o In the process of updating the WBS for Pixels and HCAL (L1-Trigger to follow) – then need to update schedules and cost books to new WBS o US-DOE is planning to go for CD1 approval in April for the CMS Upgrade. This requires a major effort to set up resource-loaded schedule. o We are trying to make the international WBS (MSP) compatible to US needs to maximize the benefit from the US effort for the international project UPO Nov. 23 2013 9

10 Plans for 2013 UPO Nov. 23 2012 10 Proposal at UPO Sept. 28 o Prepare an internal interim Technical Proposal on status and plans for CMS phase 2 1) Longevity and long term performance of current detectors 2) Physics goals, and detector requirements 3) Detector concepts and preliminary performance studies 4) Targeted R&D program 5) Cost scale  focus for June 2013 Upgrade week @ DESY o CMS discusses the document ~summer 2013 o Define phase 2 scope by end 2013 o Write Technical Proposal supported by detector performance and physics simulations (  in Physics TDR?) in 2014
