2.  Warm up: ◦ What is sentence fluency? Why is it important  Today’s objectives: The students will ◦ practice combining sentences and discuss the importance of sentence variety. ◦ revise their character sketches for sentence fluency.  Sentence fluency is using a variety of sentences to give writing a natural rhythm. 14

3.  I live in a house.  My house is brick.  My house is red.  I have a garage.  The garage is attached.  The garage is wood.  The garage is brown.  I have a back yard.  The back yard has trees.  The trees provide shade.  The yard has flowers.  The flowers are colorful.  The flowers are fragrant.  The yard has grass.  The grass is green.

4.  Switch papers and use the highlighters to mark two sections that can be revised for sentence fluency.  Example: ◦ In my story, three characters gain an item called the monkey’s paw. The characters are told that this paw can grant you three wishes. Will these characters wish for fame or fortune? With three wishes you could get anything you want. 14

5.  Next, you will rewrite the sentences on page 14. You may combine, separate, rearrange, or change the beginning. ◦ Will these characters wish for fame or fortune? With three wishes you could get anything you want. ◦ Rewrite: The reader is unsure if the characters will wish for fame or fortune since with three wishes you could get anything you want. ◦ Rewrite: With three wishes that could provide them with anything they want, will the characters wish for fame or fortune?

6.  Give the spiral back and discuss what you did.  Homework: Rewrite the two sections your partner did on a post-it note or in the margins of your draft. Next find one more section and rewrite that.

7.  Finish the following sentences: 1.One area that I feel I have improved in my draft is…because… 2.2. One area I feel I need to continue to work on in my draft is…because…. 13
