doc.: IEEE 802.11-11/1054r1 Submission July 2011 Mark Hamilton, Polycom, IncSlide 9 802.1 Architecture Document Abstract: IEEE Std 802-2001, IEEE Standard for Local and Metropolitan Area Networks: Overview and Architecture, provides an overview to the family of IEEE 802 standards. It describes the relationship of the IEEE 802 standards to the Open Systems Interconnection Basic Reference Model [ISO/IEC 7498-1:1994] and explains the relationship of these standards to the higher layer protocols; it provides a standard for the structure of LAN MAC addresses; it provides a standard for identification of public, private, prototype, and standard protocols; and it defines an Object Identifier hierarchy used within IEEE 802 for uniform allocation of Object Identifiers used in IEEE 802 standards Monday Agenda Item 4.1.13

doc.: IEEE 802.11-11/1054r1 Submission ARC Future Activities & sessions SC Chair & WG Chair have (in 2009) decided to “hibernate” the ARC SC… –until industry conditions improve, or –a specific focused task is requested of the SC for which the is sufficient volunteer interest Therefore, ARC SC will not be scheduling formal sessions again, until/unless the above happens again If you have a topic that you would like ARC SC assistance with, contact the SC chair and we’ll see what we can do. July 2011 Mark Hamilton, Polycom, Inc.Slide 11

doc.: IEEE 802.11-11/1054r1 Submission Planning for Sept 2011 No firm Sept F2F plans – one slot in reserve ARC SC will schedule teleconferences with 10 days notice –To discuss any specific requests that arise Anticipate a teleconference discussion on extending the “station/bridge concept” July 2011 Mark Hamilton, Polycom, Inc.Slide 12

doc.: IEEE 802.11-11/1054r1 Submission Notable issues raised at 802 O&A sessions CID 56: EtherType discussion in 4.2.2. –Agreed that 802.11 does not “natively” support carrying EtherType. Rather, we map it to SNAP header, per Annex P (REVmb numbering). CID 204: Section 5.3 on error rate requirements. –Already have a change to restrict some of this to wired/optical networks. Added a change to apply FER only to frames of less than 2048 octets. Agreed to change in title of the section to “Error ratios”. Rest of changes are still being discussed within 802 group. CIDs 29, 23, 12, 13: Section 5.4 on service availability following insertion/removal of a device from the network –Significantly rewrote the paragraph. Distinguish bridge insertion/removal from end station. Clarify that 802 provides for bridge insertion/removal and a quick recovery, compared to the constraints of the network technology’s packet rate. Clarify that end station insertion/removal must not affect other end stations at all (although some legacy networks can’t do this). July 2011 Mark Hamilton, Polycom, Inc.Slide 13

doc.: IEEE 802.11-11/1054r1 Submission July session minutes Wednesday 7/20/2011 –V. Chair called session to order –Agenda approved –802 Organization & Architecture revision ballot comments discussed Agreed to propose updated Figure 4-11 (REVmb D9.0) as the figure for the 802.11 RM Annex (this update includes 11u concepts) Documents 11-11/1053r0, 11-10/1450r0 Note that previous slide in this (11-11/1054) document was created following the ARC SC session, and not discussed there –Future plans discussion Anticipate a teleconference, with 10 days notice, to discuss extending 802 O&A “station/bridge” concept to better fit 802.11 –Session adjourned July 2011 Mark Hamilton, Polycom, Inc.Slide 14
