Definition/explanation A group of inherited disorders that involve muscle weakness and loss of muscle tissue.

Causes Hundred of genes are involved in making proteins that protect muscle fibers from damage. Muscular Dystrophy is caused by a genetic mutation that’s particular to that type of disease, many of these mutations are inherited or genetic.

Symptoms Frequent falls Difficulty getting up from a lying or sitting position Trouble running or jumping Waddling gait Large calf muscles Learning disabilities

How is it Diagnosed? Enzyme tests – measures the amount of Enzymes in your blood. Electromyography- inserting an electrode needle through your skin and into the muscle to be tested. Muscle biopsy- small piece of muscle can be removed through a small incision. Genetic testing- blood samples can be examined for mutations in some of the genes
