7 The Best Fit A BCD Teachers should focus on the basic essential skills and work to instill traditional American virtues. Teachers should provide instruction that allows students to interact with others as they learn from activities that are relevant. Teachers should give students choices about what they want to learn to help them learn to choose their own paths. Teachers should focus on providing procedures and positive reinforcement for students as a way to condition them for learning.

12 Diagnostic Assessment Any method, strategy or process used to assess the knowledge and skill of participants before the instruction is designed. Diagnostic Assessment: 1. provides data that can determine options for students to take in information, construct meaning, and to demonstrate understanding of new information 2. helps teachers anticipate differences before planning challenging and respectful learning experiences 3. allows teachers to meet students where they are

14 Formative Assessment A process of accumulating information about a student’s progress to help make instructional decisions that will improve his/her understandings and achievement levels. Formative Assessment: 1. depicts student’s life as a learner 2. used to make instructional adjustments 3. alerts the teacher about student misconceptions 4. “early warning signal” 5. allows students to change their learning patterns 6. provides regular feedback 7. provides evidence of progress 8. aligns with instructional/curricular outcomes

16 Summative Assessment A means to determine a student’s mastery and understanding of information, skills, concepts, or processes. Summative Assessment: 1. should reflect formative assessments that precede it 2. should match material taught 3. may determine student’s exit achievement 4. may be tied to a final decision, grade or report 5. should align with instructional/curricular outcomes 6. may be a form of alternative assessment

20 Make every minute count The old formula was instruct, instruct, instruct, and then assess. Assessment and instruction need to be completely interwoven for optimal student success.
