1 HBD HV Control and Monitoring System RUN-9 UPDATE Manuel Proissl HBD Meeting 04/08/2009

2 SOFTWARE UPDATES  The TripProtect System is not only aware of new dead shorts, but now also ‘healing’ shorts or rather a safety check to be sure any resistor changes are detected in case the TripProtect calibration has not been completed afterwards!  Due to major HV server crashes in the past week, I’ve extended HV Control capability to run on any VA machine, based on availability.  Everyone who’s aware of RC’s very helpful Message Viewer, which is used by all DAQ experts, will appreciate the HV system’s latest update – its own Message Viewer, categorizing Error, Warning protocols and general process activity.  Automated calibration of the TripProtect system based on the LeCroy delivered current measurements implemented, which represents another config option besides the measured resistor chain method. 3 HV OPERATION DURING PHYSICS RUNS  During Physics Run 278942, the SA1 changed the P/T trigger set and operated HV during the run with the permission of the SL, although the Standing Orders strongly prohibit any voltage changes during run… Upcoming Update: HV Control will not leave this “catastrophic analysis nightmare” issue to the humans anymore..instead, it will have the option to either block or ‘strongly’ warn the SA1 when HV operation is requested during Physics Runs! 4 DETECTOR UPDATE  After the resistor change on EN4-B at the last week’s access, the measured current started out at ~88.56uA at 2.5kV and over a time period of about 4 days, slowly turned into a dead short. It’s drawing now ~89.6uA at Standby!  ES1 however, which has not been touched during the access, performed well with the new TP calibration until 04/09 10PM EST, and may have gotten another dead strip, which still needs to be investigated at our next access. Since then, ES1 has been turned off!  All 4 modules on Relay Board No. 2 [WN5, WS1,2,3] are showing spontaneous massive trips from time to time: overall this has been happening ~7 times over the past 2 weeks. Strategy: New UVC 1471N, communication cable and relay board will be tested with a comparable load at 4kV until the next access (24/7) and then finally if test successful, will replace the setup associated with box no. 2 Upgrades For Run9 | PHENIX, BNL HBD HV Control System HBD Meeting :: April 8 th, 2009 HBD HV Control & Monitoring System Manuel Proissl Page 4 of 4
