4. To get to the very beginning of the Mississippi River we could drive from Kalamazoo to Lake Itasca, Minnesota. The Mississippi River begins at Lake Itasca.

5. We couldn’t get on a riverboat at Lake Itasca because the river is too small there. This man wanted to travel the whole length of the Mississippi River in a canoe. Here he is starting the trip where the Mississippi River begins: coming out of Lake Itasca.

6. The Mississippi River soon gets much wider. At one point it is over 1 mile wide.
