1 Warm-Up 2/12/16  Read the following information and answer the question with 2-3 complete sentences in your notebook  General Philip Sheridan was a close friend of Ulysses Grant and important to the Union victory in the Civil War. He became the commander of the United States Army responsible for returning the American Indians to their reservations after the Civil War ended in 1865. In September 1866, Sheridan spent several months at Fort Scott in Fredericksburg, Texas. Sheridan’s role was to subdue the Indians in the Texas Hill Country.  General Sheridan is credited with the following quote: “The only good Indian is a dead Indian.”  Sheridan denied having made the statement; however, many people agreed with the statement. Why?

3 Recap Search for Peace – 1867  President Grant set of Indian agents known as Quakers who would be friendly in dealing with the Natives.  Agents from the U.S. government met with Natives in Kansas and signed a peace treaty called the Treaty of Medicine Lodge Creek. According to this, the Natives agreed to go to the reservations in Oklahoma. (Indian Territory)

4 Peace Policy Fails  Many Kiowa and Comanche refused to go to the reservations. They claimed they were cheated and treated badly by agents.

5 Small Group Talk  Think (30 Seconds): Think of a time when you were homesick or lonesome for friends and family, maybe summer camp or a first sleep-over when you were younger.  Write (1 Minute): Write down what those feelings were like or how you dealt with being lonesome.  Pair:  Partner A share with Partner B (30 Seconds)  Partner B share with Partner A (30 Seconds)  Share: Be prepared to share aloud.

6 Peace Policy Fails  Quanah Parker was the last chief of the Comanches.  He was the son of Peta Nocona and Cynthia Ann Parker, a white girl taken captive during the raid of 1863 on Fort Parker, Texas.  His was the last tribe to come into the reservation system.  He fought against the U.S. Government and by raiding Texas towns  After being forced onto the Reservation he adopted the “white ways” by learning English and the Western Culture  Some of the Comanches claimed he “sold out to the white man” after he adopted the American way of life

7 Quanah Parker Article  Read the Quanah Parker article and answer the following question in your notebook in 4-5 sentences  How might the events of losing his parents at an early age change his life and the actions he might take to protect the Comanche people?  Why did the American government attempt to Americanize the Indian tribes?

8 Buffalo Soldier  Working with your group look at the packet on your table and answer the Buffalo Soldier questionnaire
