3 RULES OF THE FOOD LAB 1. Never run in the kitchen 2. Be familiar with the location and use of safety equipment 3. Tie back long hair 4. Remove jewellery 5. Keep your station clutter free... No backpacks 6. Keep your station tidy 7. Keep cupboard doors and drawers closed 8. Turn off and unplug small appliances when not in use 9. Turn off burners when they are not in use 10. Never use broken equipment 11. Use the right tool for the job 12. R-E-S-P-E-C-T!

4 Fire Prevention 1. Keep paper away from hot surfaces 2. Do not wear loose fitting clothing 3. When cooking with fat monitor the temperature 4. Use oven mitts and pot holders for their intended use 5. Keep the oven clean, spills can catch fire Type of Fire How to Extinguish PaperWater Fabric Stop, Drop and Roll. 5 Preventing Burns 1. Use oven mitts or pot holders for their intended use 2. Be careful of wet mitts or potholders 3. Tilt pot lids away from you to block steam 4. Be careful of hot spots from microwave 5. Pull out oven rack when removing foods 6. Keep pot handles turned toward the centre 7. Turn off the stove when not in use

6 Preventing Falls 1. Clean up spills immediately 2. Do not stand on stools 3. Tie up your shoe laces

7 Preventing Cuts 1. Never put knives in the sink. 2. If you drop a knife, do not attempt to catch it. 3. Use the correct tool for the job. 4. Clean up broken glass immediately. 5. Be careful of the sharp edges of can lids.

8 Using Electrical Equipment Safely 1. Use electrical equipment on the island away from water 2. Do not use electrical equipment with wet hands 3. Do not use appliances with damaged cords 4. Pull the plug, not the cord 5. Unplug the appliance when you are changing equipment parts 6. Turn off when not in use

10 Preventing Accidents from Household Chemicals 1. Follow instructions carefully 2. Dispose of containers properly 3. Store away from food and out of the reach of children 4. Keep flammable products away from heat

17 Accidents… If an accident occurs in the room, tell me IMMEDIATELY!

18 Most Common Accidents… 1. Hitting head on cupboard door 2. Cut finger 3. Burn on the forearm Location of First Aid Kit Bandaids Gauze Ice in Freezer

19 BLEEDING… 1. Clean the wound 2. Cover the wound with a sterile cloth. 3. Apply direct pressure. Until the bleeding stops 4. Elevate the area 5. If an object is embedded in the skin, do not remove it. Go to the doctor.

20 BURNS… 1. Cool the area by placing it under cold water. 2. Apply ice to relieve the pain. 3. If the injured area is bigger than a quarter, seek medical assistance.

21 POISONING… 1. Call 911 or the Poison Control Centre (613) 737-1100 2. Identify the type of poison 3. Follow treatment instructions on label and by medical personnel

22 CHOKING… 1. Coughing – Encourage to cough 2. Full blockage Call for help 5 Back blows 5 Heimlich thrusts 3. Falls unconscious Call for help (911) Look in mouth, try to remove the object Start CPR 30 Compressions to 2 breaths

23 YOU CHOKING… No one around Give yourself the Heimlich Use a chair or railing
