3 Aims of the New Primary Curriculum 2014 for Maths 3 main aims... 1. fluency 2. problem solving 3. reasoning What do they mean?!

4 Year group expectations You should have received a copy of these at parent's evening in October. Spend some time looking through the objectives. What interests you? What do you find scary?!

5 Mental vs. written methods When working on calculations with children, we always encourage them to think about which is more important before solving the calculation they have been given: doing the calculation mentally or writing the calculation down.

7 Children attempting to use formal written methods without a secure understanding of the numbers they are working with will try to remember rules, which may result in mistakes. The understanding of what they are doing and why (reasoning) they are doing it is crucial in order for them to make progress.

8 'I do it like that because that's the way my teacher told me'...should be... 'I do it like that because I know that the 2 in 24 means 20 so 20 add 30 equals 50. I put the 5 underneath the tens column, 5 tens makes 50'. When completing learning with your children at home ask them to explain themselves (reason).

9 How should a child explain what is wrong with this? What would this tell you about their understanding of number? In which year (3,4,5 or 6) would you expect a child to be able to spot this mistake and fix it?

11 What written methods look like at Birkby Junior School We have a school written calculation policy that all teachers follow. This ensures consistency of methods across the school. The parent booklet gives examples for.... addition subtraction multiplication division...and clearly shows you which year group will be following which method.
