1  Assessment is often equated and confused with evaluation, but the two concepts are different. Assessment is used to determine what a student knows or can do, while evaluation is used to determine the worth or value of a course or program. EDN-102 1

2 What is written Assessment??? Written assessments include a broad range of assessments in which students show their understanding with paper and pencil. Written assessment can include essays, assignments, reports, dissertations, diaries, portfolios and workbooks. It may take place as course work or in an examination. EDN-102 2

3 i. Able to assess the student's ability to be organized and focused under pressure. ii. Ability to test the student's capacity to draw on a wide range of knowledge and to synthesize and identify recurrent themes. iii. Displays how students express themselves in their own words. iv. Students are more likely to study the broad issues, general concepts and interrelationships rather than specific details. v. Equality of Opportunity - fair in that the students all have the same exam to do in the same way in the same timescale. EDN-102 3
