5 Acculturation Strategies Integration: keeping best of heritage culture but participating in new culture Assimilation: fully embrace new culture, leave behind old culture Separation: live in new culture but maintain heritage culture Marginalization: leaving behind old culture but not embracing new – not very likely

6 Cultural Adjustment Adjustment will be easier the less adjusting one has to do Cultural distance: similarity of old & new culture Language: ease of learning new language Cultural fit: similarity of the individual’s values & the host culture’s values (e.g., self-concept)

7 Objectives Understand the process of frame-switching Understand the concept of stereotype threat and identify situations which make someone susceptible

8 Multicultural People Blending: having attitudes averaged from your heritage culture & new culture Frame-switching: keeping distinct ways of thinking, speaking, and responding from both heritage and new culture & using either when appropriate Code switching: changing public behavior to fit in with the norms of that environment

9 Multicultural Challenges Stereotype threat Fear that you will fulfill a negative stereotype about your group leads to worse performance and the fulfillment of that stereotype
