2. ROME EXPANSION From a small city-state in central Italy, Rome grew into a great city It was the heart of one of the largest and most long-lasting empires in history Romans were often ruthless in their methods They destroyed entire cities as well as enslaved whole populations

3. ROME 264-133 B.C. Most of the independent lands around the Mediterranean Sea, with the exception of Egypt, came under Roman rule There were three successful wars known as the Punic Wars, but only the first one helped to gain territory

4. PUNIC WARS First War= Territory Gained – Sicily – Sardinia – Corsica – Spain – Central Northern Africa Second War Second was a struggle/they lost several battles Third War At the end of the third war, Rome finally defeated Carthage

5. AS A RESULT OF VICTORY After the Punic Wars, Rome expanded by – Building homes, roads, and aqueducts, temples, public baths, and monuments to celebrate the victory

UNITED STATES EXPANSION 1782-1783: Boundaries of the United States are set on the north by Canada, on the south by Spanish Florida, on the west by the Mississippi River, and on the east by the Atlantic Ocean. 1803: The Louisiana Purchase moves the western boundary of the United States to the Rocky Mountains, and is said to double the size of the U.S.

UNITED STATES EXPANSION CONT. 1848: The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo after the Mexican War between the U.S. and Mexico ended in the purchase of Arizona, California, Nevada, New Mexico, Texas, Utah, and western Colorado. 1867: Alaska is bought from Russia for $7.2 million. 1898: Hawaii is added into the United States.

11. COMPARISON Rome and the United States claimed territory in different ways. While Rome took most of its land by war, the United States got its territory by purchase or treaties with other countries.
