2 Collaborative revision zThere are many kinds of drafts; not all of them are useful in every situation zDifferent drafts call for different kinds of feedback zAs a writer, knowing what to ask for saves time and minimizes conflict zAs an editor, knowing how to respond saves time and minimizes conflict

3 Types of drafts and their uses zPreliminary draft (internal working document) yUses: getting ideas on paper, especially if you have lots of time yFeedback: do self-revision first, then develop questions to ask. Focus on “big picture” - what’s confusing or unclear, what information is missing zReview draft (solicit external feedback) yUses: obtaining feedback on issues of content or organization yFeedback: focus on organization and format, persuasive adaptiveness, content development, strategic opening and closing zNear-final draft (a day before the final is due) yUses: polishing and wordsmithing yFeedback: concentrate on sentence structure, word choice, and proofreading

5 Collaborative writing zUse your resources effectively zPlan time for soliciting and processing input zExpect to write multiple drafts zStart big and work down to small zRevise, revise, revise!!!

6 Resume falsification case z With your collaborative report/presentation team, outline a communication plan for the situation z Consider the ethical concerns involved from all perspectives - Hector’s, Mary’s, Jane’s, etc. z Turn in the communication plan and be prepared to discuss the ethical issues and the questions at the end of the case

7 Document analysis zRead the two memo samples with your group and answer these questions: yWhich memo is more effective? yWhat attitude toward readers does each convey? yHow well organized and planned does each appear? zBe prepared to report on your choice for most effective and why you chose it

8 Collaborative work time zAs a group, prepare a brief (one or two paragraph) summary of your topic zInclude the following: yDocuments you will examine yKey background of the situation yMethods or analytical frameworks you will use yMajor problem(s) you will address

9 Assignment zBe prepared for a timed writing assignment in class on Thursday (Final Section Assignment) zWork on your collaborative report and presentation zRead Ch. 3 in EBC

10 Assignment zBe ready to discuss the Japanese e-mail project (Section 004) zSign up for a presentation time slot zWork on your collaborative report and presentation zRead Ch. 3 in EBC
